Netgrass Collaboration #3

I was finally able to download it to soundcloud but I don’t know if it has been converted to Mp3 or something I can DL to Kompoz. I found a few online converters that will convert it, just going to have to play with it until I figure it out.

I may have to email it to ya Jesse, let me see if I can’t figure it out for future use though.

Whenever you guys get your tracks ready is fine with me. I’m heading out for Magnoliafest this weekend anyway.

If it takes a while to finish, I’ll just keep jamming to my scratch track. It’s good for me to practice mando occasionally, anyway. I keep coming up with new ideas.

Nice lineup!

I finally got it uploaded to your project on kompoz Larry. I think it lost some sound quality in the conversion, but not much. This was kind of a test version because I was nervous about being able to get everything uploaded. I can play it cleaner, but I wanted to see what y’all thought about the sound quality and if I can improve it. I could sit closer to the recorder if I need to, or further away.

I recorded this from your slowed down youtube mp3, Larry. It may not be in time with what you have on Kompoz. Let me know what I need to do. I can definately play it cleaner.

I grabbed your track, Shawn. It’s better recording quality than I thought we might get. You did that with your camera mic?

The record levels seem about right, too. The only problem I could hear, when I was listening closely, was a little bleed through of the backing track onto your guitar track.

It will have to be re-recorded to fit with the scratch track, though. The slowed down version is at about 170 (it being a live performance, they changed pace a little during the song), while the scratch track is a steady 170.

Looks like you’ve made it over the technological hurdles, though, so now we can have some fun!

Sounds good Larry! I’ll re-record it playing along to what you have on kompoz. I know how to do everything now so I won’t be sweating that. I had the backing track going in some head phones and I could hear it in the recording before I started playing. I’ll make sure the volume on that is turned down.

Do you think I should play the rhythm one time through before my break, or does that not sound too good? Be brutally honest, you’re not going to hurt my feelings. Maybe I can figure something better out. The rhythm may need to be more straight forward so things don’t get to confusing/muddy?

Yeah, that’s all camera mic. Some of these camera’s have a plug for an external mic, but I don’t think mine does.

I tacked on a mando intro and uploaded it: http://www.kompoz.com/compose-collaborate/home.track.project?trackId=223016&projectId=35598

Shawn, your tracks are going to have a little more background noise on them than mine or oldhat’s, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use your rhythm playing. Your recording seems similar in quality to what oldhat was getting before he upgraded, and we used his rhythm track on I Know You Rider. If you do play the rhythm and we decide not to use it, it’s no harm done anyway. You can either do separate tracks for rhythm and lead or do it all in one track -whatever works best for you.

I liked the rhythm figure you were using but I guess you’ll just have to try it to see how it fits with the mix. I always start with a really basic rhythm pattern on the scratch track because I have no idea what’s going to be added next and it’s easy to clutter the mix.

I’ll start working on a mando chop, next. Also, my bass track is just my Telecaster run through an effects box, so if anyone wants to add a real bass track, that would be cool.

I deleted my old break just to keep things organized. I uploaded a new one with just the break and I have another one I still have to upload with the rhythm and a break.

The one with just the break has a few bum notes, but overall, it’s not terrible. The one with the rhythm and a break I think was a little better BUT, it has one major bum note right at the beginning of the break  . The rhythm I’m playing sounds off beat listening to it alone but sounds in time while I’m playing it, I don’t know.

Rant:

I would love to be able edit my recordings so I could play it a few times through and then cut out the break when I nail it. Right now it’s one take and I have to get it right! (no pressure  ) If I play it more than one time through, the files are huge. Oh well, I can definately see myself obsessing over it to get it perfect but I guess you have to say that’s good enough at some point. Once I get a little more time to figure things out, I can get into editing to get everything perfect.

Cool! I’ll get over there and check it out, Shawn.

Getting the perfect take sure is tricky, isn’t it? I’m still trying to get my first one. I always think I can do it a little better, but at some point there is a diminishing return on my efforts and I have to let it go.

If you want to get multiple takes, couldn’t you just play over every break for the entire song, download the file to your computer, crop out the takes you didn’t like (with something like Audacity), then upload the saved file?

Rhythm and break uploaded to Kompoz.

Your mando break sounds great Larry! Good sound and clean playing.

I never tried to download it to my computer and then try to edit from there. I may try to see what I can find. It would be nice to find a free way to do it rather than buying editing software, but it may be worth it because I’m really enjoying the recording process.

Ha! You’re recording faster than I’m mixing. I uploaded a mash-up with your first break.

I rolled off the high end a little on your track to try to compensate for the difference in our mics.

You would only need some simple editing software. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ is free and would do what you need. Then if you get into recording, you can save your pennies for a microphone instead.

Haha! Sounds good Larry! I think I’m a little off beat there at first but then I get back in the groove. That’s that nervous energy there at first until I settle down.

Being off beat there at the first is bugging me Larry. What do ya think, re-do? The notes on the A part are weaksauce, I think I can put a little more mustard on 'em.

Where’s Jesse, he’ll tell me the whole truth!

Like I said, I am here…my part is pretty much done, is a matter of recording it.

I will def throw down something in the next day or so…remember that D18 I bought a month back? Well as mentioned in the “deal” we worked out a neck reset and a few other items…well I am proud to say that we got it in 2 weeks ago and I was called today to come pick up the D18 as it is done. I really wanted to record with this instrument so I was busy today and am picking her up tomorrow…so LOOK OUT!

For some reason one of my settings on my laptop is screwed…I can hear audio just about everywhere besides for on Kompoz…so I gotta figure that out as I hear nothing when I listen to a track on there…just silence…so I gotta figure that out.

Plus I have a buddy that fired all his construction workers, he asked if I could help him out so I been putting some of my free time into that over the last week.

Again, I am here!

Oldhat

Here’s a mix with your second track plugged in.

I honestly think your first cut was okay, but I know how it is when you get up-close and personal with a recording. See if you like this one better.

I’ll get a mando chop done tomorrow.

Glad to hear you got the D-18 back, can’t wait to hear her sing…speaking of singing…

New mix with mando chop and TNT’s track sync’d a little better.

Do you want to play a rhythm track for the entire song, Shawn?

Since it’s just the three of us and we have lots of space, I think I’m going to record a second more improvisational mando break next.

I’ve also noticed a lot of bands doing a dual or even triple lead line for part of the song. Would you guys want to try that?

That was recorded on a HeroCam?!?!?! That’s pretty incredible. I really think that’s awesome you all got that done with what you have.
I also read the lyrics Dianne posted… wow. I never would have guessed what a cuckoo’s nest is. Admittedly, I didn’t spend any time pondering what it might be, but nonethless… I am a bit concerned about the health aspects of clapping a hand on it. It sounds like there might be some potential for damage.

Not likely to make the cuckoo very happy, either. Might lose access to the nest altogether if I tried that.

I’m good with mix 3 Larry. That sounds good enough to my ears and the missed note at the start is not as bad as being off beat in the other one. I wouldn’t mind playing rhythm but my 1 minute 36 second clips are like 114MB before I convert 'em. I think it was 117,000 KB. 3+ mintues would be huge. Did you try my rhythm track against the mix to see what it sounded like? I’m up for anything, let me know what I need to do on the triple lead line.

Mike- Yup, that was recorded on my little gopro hero cam. No mic or anything. I was reading something about it recording with like 4 tracks (I think, mp4?) and then converting it to mp3 reduces the quality to like the main 2 tracks. I can tell it lost a little quality but not much. I’m happy with it if you guys are.

Now, who’s singing this one?
