Netgrass Collaboration #2

hehehe, get a capo for that fiddle if F is kicking your butt!

E still isn’t ideal, but I guess you could tune a half note sharp? I’m not saying it’s a good idea, but it’s a thought.

I can just see it now… Mike I took your advice. My fiddle folded in half… thanks!

Well, lets see here…Larry already covered the intro with the reso.
@Mike, my fiddle has already folded up once and the action is close to 1/2 inch toward the bridge cause it couldn’t be straightened back out without wrecking it supposedly.

Ok, story time: Wife moved stuff for the xmas tree to go up and put my fiddle under the bed not thinking that the wood stove is directly under our bedroom…wait a week or two and Dave needs his fiddle for a gig…um, good thing I had Two fiddles. Wish I still had my other one as I think it recorded better anyway. I loaned it to a kid to learn on with the agreement she could keep it as long as she was playing it, if not she had to give it back so someone else might be able to use it. She is giving it up 'cause of more interest in other things so I’ll be getting it back soon.

@ Ozi, other than a bit low on the last line each time that’s a pretty good bari part.

Does that mean I’ve picked the wrong notes that are a bit low, or that I’m singing flat? I’ll have another listen, if the first I’ll work out better notes - if the second, I’ll have another go and then just shoot myself, ok?

I’m guessing that you just thought the melody went a bit lower at the end of the phrase than it actually does. I thought you did a nice job otherwise. It’s a hard part to find sometimes.

I"m home to feed the dog and get a quick shower, so I took the chance to mix up the new tracks. I dropped in ozi’s vocals and phoephus’ slide guitar and uploaded two mixes - one with three part harmony and one with four part harmony. I think the harmonies are a little smoother now. See what you think.

You guys fall of the face of da errf?

Waiting to see what everyone wants to feature as a mix or if you think it needs something else yet.
I listened to both versions on the PC but couldn’t make a decision. going to try headphones next.

Been doing some work outside today and a band is over here practicing this afternoon (I’m recording them).

I’m back home, but I’ve mostly been catching up on lost sleep today. I haven’t re-visited my quick mixes from Saturday morning yet.

No, just waiting for your comment on the mixes

I forgot to mention that I was able to clean up the ending a little with the last mixes. The banjo was a little out in front of the beat (most likely a sync issue), so I gave it a little nudge and it sounds a little nicer now.

@ larry, Frist one there wins…I was winning!

Same here, I don’t pick up a lot of difference so it’s your call.
Larry, do you want the bari recorded again to try to correct the low notes that Jesse commented on, or do they actually work?
Also I hadn’t really listened to ending till read your last comment and yes, it sounds a lot tighter. So it was the mixer,eh, not the musos…

Could have been that Dave was in a hurry to get home, but seems more likely a sync problem. We started with Mike’s mix, then I set up all the tracks again on my computer. Plus, we swapped out the bass track and I re-did my mando ending. I don’t really remember the exact order we did all that, but with so many changes, it’s easy to get out of sync.

So, are we keeping the slide guitar on two breaks or does someone have something else to add?

Wasn’t your reso guitar on one of the breaks?

We could do the reso, but that’s not much of a change from the slide.

I’ll let you guys fight it out, all i contributed was about 18 seconds or so of a guitar break so the rest is up to you guys and I am pleading the “5th”.

Oldhat

Since Dave picked the song and is singing lead, I’m going to offer suggestions and defer to his choices. It would be nice to operate our projects as a complete democracy but that’s not too practical - I don’t think we’d ever get finished.

In the future, if we rotate who gets to pick the songs, everyone can have a turn at being musical director.

I think we’re okay with the slide guitar like it is, I just wasn’t sure if someone else had an idea to contribute.

Here’s another attempt at the dry mix. It’s only marginally different than Mix 12 (my only trick is riding the faders), but may be a little smoother.

I’ve been doing some late night mixing. Here’s a wet mix with dobro and three part harmony.
