Lets do a collaboration

I actually think if Dave took the second part of the break and ends with 2 quick hammer-ons from from C-C# and then mine would be a nice ending. Then my ending would start right on the word “miss” if you were singing “gonna miss your baby” in the last part.

I think even with 2 quick hammer-ons from B-C would work good also on the banjo…so either C-C# or B-C

Jesse

I’m just back from Saturday night jam. It was nice to cut loose after all the detailed work we’ve been doing. I just let all my off-key singing and bad notes float off into the ether, never to be heard again.

Now, I’m refreshed and ready to get started on your tracks, Jesse. Give me a while to tinker.

You are home a bit early for a Saturday night jam. When I used to jam we started at 7:00 and once the crowd died off and a few musicians had to leave then the fun began. We’d typically have between 8-14 jamming then once it got down to around 4-5 after 10:30 or so we’d play til 12:30 or 1:00.

I used to get all worked up and it was hard to calm back down after 5 hours or so of flailing away…I know damn near every time my fingers would be blistered and ready for a 2 day break.

I’m always ready to hang around for smaller jams, too, but nobody was biting tonight. We had a small group what with all the bad weather we’ve had around here. A lot of people are still flooded out.

Nice work on the new track, Jesse! Got a new mix uploaded under mando guitar idea. Now, take us home, Dave!

Thanks for the compliment on the track…figured I’d spice it up/add in some licks on guitar so folks here may see how i applied them…your tremolo set the stage for me to jump out into it with “whatever” I wanted to play.

A note:

Is funny like your part or my part, how standing “alone” they might not be that flashy (used “flashy” for lack of a better term) but when you hear them put together over a rhythm and as a “whole” it simply “works”. Well to break that down even more it’s funny how when dissecting a “break” or even our two parts there, how each little 3 or 4 note run, lick, or passage may not sound that good either… until you put the entire phrase together…almost like when you start learning a fiddle tune and you start playing it at 50bpm and some things sound weird until you can get it up to speed.

It’s really that way for the enitre song. Simple little pieces fit together to make something pretty interesting.

I’ll get something down by tomorrow afternoon for sure.

I think I will cut vamps behind Larry singing and both of your last leads you just added. we can replace the existing banjo with it to let Larry’s mando back-up and your last breaks stand out better without interference. It will also help continue the chop while the mando is playing something else and add more continuity.

We’re getting close to finishing! It’s good that we all stayed focused on this project. It could have easily languished for a month or more. We’re going to finish in less than 2 weeks.

I just uploaded a remix. I forgot to drop the rhythm guitar out for Jesse’s last break. It sounds a little cleaner now.

Yeah I notice that little muted sweep I do gets lost in the mix…not a problem though, sounds like where the muted sweep is that it’s a pre-bend note instead… so by all accounts it will work…little “B-Bender” action like Clarence White!

You gotta make us proud with that Banjer Dave, we’re giving you the 3rd spot with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th and down 2, so knock it out of the park so we get the “walk-off win”…no pressure what-so-ever!

Uploaded new part. If it passes Larry’s inspection (darn drill sergeant anyway…hehe) we should be good to go.

Larry if you think I should cut it again let me know, I’ll be around all day today.

I noticed that Banjer over the lead for the last shared break. I think it sounds good, but I am interested in hearing what it sounds like w/o your banjo lead fills in the break.

For those of you following this, we have moved from the “mix down” to another file there called “mandolin & guitar idea” in the “tracks” section. It sounds just like the main track but it appears Larry wanted to keep them main track and “doodle” with a copy. We are using 3 three instruments and sharing a single break. You can find the file here and the shared break starts with Larry’s part on mando at around 3:05 or so then I follow with guitar.

Also if you look under “tracks” there are certain files there to potentially hear some individual parts. Larry deletes them most of the time once a mix down is complete but my guitar 3rd break is there if anyone wants to hear it. If any one is interested in it then I can tab it out if you want…note I done it 3 times for Larry to pick the “best”.

I uploaded a rough mix. Let me know what you think. I kept the 5th break open on the main track for Ron. I’m using our 5th break as a back up in case he doesn’t get around to finishing the track.

Sounds good Larry! Not that bad for a couple of Yahoo’s!

Notice one thing I’d change:

Intro…that is a quick transition after I play the intro and then start to strum the G chord in the intro track…the strum ends real quick and into what is not the intro and sounds “canned”…there are other beats of strum on the track so maybe let one more strum ring out and slowly fade it like walking away from the mic.

The rest of the song sounds pretty “live” to me. There are quirks here and there, especially in my voice and that is what “live” sounds like, so mission accomplished. Since we plugged my harmony from the last verse into the first I really don’t think it worked that well. I can do another harmony or if Dave has the 3rd part to that I’d plug his in if you guys see fit.

I am pretty impressed with the way it has turned out. I am going to work a bit harder on the sound I get from the new mic. It’s a nice mic and I am sure there is a few hours worth of time I can spend in learning how to set it up better, of which I have made little effort…I simply purchased it, took about an hour to figure out how to at least get it to be recognized by my computer then simply started recording…so a lot is to be desired in the set-up that I have not even looked into but I am sure is there.

It sounds great!

Wanted to say that the last break with the 3 instruments sounds pretty damn good/turned out great. Sounds like almost like we are in a jam setting and have the rest between the parts like you would looking around the room and nodding off to whoever is gonna take the next part and it takes some " musical space" to jump in.

Good stuff!

I know what you mean about the transition from the intro to the first verse, Jesse. I think it could be smoother, too. The trick is blending your intro, which was done with your new mic, and the rhythm guitar, which was done with your old mic.

That last break was kind of tricky blending together, too. I’m still not overly pleased with my mandolin, but I’m not sure I can do much better with a re-record.

As always, thanks for your feedback, Mike.

Hey for you “bluegrass techie” guys out there:

What is the name of that “move” I make right a 0:51 in my guitar break and Dave does it in his phrasing/fill at 1:14?

It seems to appear most of the time right after the intro phrase of a lead and fills the space until you are ready for a scecond phrase. I remember the first time I heard a guy do that on a mandolin I thought “Man that is such a cool move”…I think it sounds best on a mandolin and is really cool/sticks out more when someone does it on the mandolin.

But was wondering if there is a name for that move in picking circles?

Jesse, I re-uploaded the rough mix with your intro on a longer, slower fade out. Seems like the vocals mask the transition to the rhythm track better, now.

I uploaded our song onto my Soundclick page, too.

Let’s see if we can take over the number one spot on Soundclick’s bluegrass charts. Each play from an unique IP address counts as a vote once every 24 hours, so get your family and friends to listen, too.

Larry,

Sounds a lot better now on the intro transistion, at least to me it does! Singing def masks it out in the perfectly.

OK on getting folks to give us a hit in going there and listening to it! I’ll see what I can do.
