hmmmmm…not caring for the resonator guitar idea much…even if it is made by the Dopyera bros. Maybe in something more syrupy…
um, I could but I like the split break idea better.
You guys decide.

I uploaded 1/3 of a mando break under Mando Idea 1. If that doesn’t work for you, I’ll do an alternate take as soon as the house quites down a little.
I was just reading mauro’s comments on Kompoz. His English always makes me smile.
I think to lose sleep over it…haha
I’ll work out a part to they break and get back with ya. I’ll start after Larry and probably record one to the end, then cut out what part Dave wants.
Freaking gonna be hot out today so I will have plenty of time hanging out in the house…on my second pot of coffee already this morn so it may end up sounding like a guitar break in plugged polly as usually I only have about 3-4 cups of coffee a day…I’m at 7 now and making a new pot.
Oldhat
Gave it a second try. Don’t know if it’s any better, but there’s lots-o-tremolo.
Sounded a bit better to me. I’m happy with it if you are.
It’s not exactly what I was hoping for, but if you can build on it, go ahead. I’ll see if I can get it a little smoother after I take a break.
You can mix it up any way you choose, I was just trying to help you get ideas.
Well, like I said before, not having ideas -or licks- is a big problem with my mandolin playing, so I can use all the help I can get. I get frustrated with how limited I am, but I really shouldn’t. I put in very little time on the mandolin, and when I do pick it up, I end up playing it like a little guitar. Things like tremolo that I don’t use on guitar too much are the areas where I’m weakest.
I thought you were supposed to play a mando like a guitar; chords, scales, tremelo, arpeggios, bits & pieces of any and all… it is a very versatile instrument, you just need to have an open mind…or in my case one that opened and drained…
I think there is a difference in the right hand between mandolin players and guitar players and I’m not certain how to describe it. Seems like a lot of mandolin players use more wrist action and less single note picking than I tend to use on the guitar. Maybe that’s wrong, but the attack seems different to me. When I pick single notes my mando seems puny compared to the tone good pickers get.
Wehre so you attack the strings? Should be up near or over the fingerboard usually.
I had no idea where I was picking - had to get out the mando to check. Seems like I tend to pick right at the end of the fretboard, or about even with the front end of the f-holes.
that’s right in the correct neighborhood. Are you letting the pick roll through both strings of a pair when playing? If you are only hitting a single string that would really thin out the sound.
I think I get through both strings though maybe not as crisply as a good player. Part of my problem may be not knowing how to mic the mando.
Most times I’ve had the mic directly in front of the middle of the bottom f hole. I have always preferred a mic with a treble roll-off but they are hard to find it seems since they quit making the atm11 (what a great mic).
That’s where I’ve been placing the mic, too. So much for that excuse. Guess it’s my playing after all.
Just blame it on the instrument!
Larry,
I uploaded the guitar break for the last trio of instruments…can be used either the second or the outro (3rd) for last break.
I started it with one of Ben’s Licks (partial) that he taught, took it to a Bryan Sutton sweep mute, filled in, then finished it with the “G lick” two times in a row like you did on the mando fill in order repeat that line/the g lick
Within the file there are 3 “takes”…take the one that fits the best. …of which I think is the second one…is a pretty cool/hot little partial break of licks…wasn’t sure how it was gonna sound when I heard it in my head but it fist just fine.
