I got worried on this one too! After the third guess, I couldn’t find anything else that would even qualify as a word. I put it away and tried three more times through the day without anything…until tonight.

Jeff, didn’t you work in the aerospace industry?
Hey Mark,
I was in the Air Force for 20 years. Like you, I got a Mechanical Engineering degree, but I pursued it because I had an ROTC scholarship that was designated for that field. I worked jet engine testing and earned a Mechanical Engineering masters by taking classes part time. That opened the door for an ROTC instructor position at the University of Arizona, so I got to teach the history of air power there. I really liked teaching and was fortunate to follow that with an assignment teaching engineering (thermodynamics and heat transfer) at the Air Force Academy. Then I got even luckier and was sponsored by AFIT (the Air Force grad school in Ohio) to pursue an Aerospace Engineering PhD at Penn State. I next worked at AFIT and then finished my Air Force career helping run the Community College of the Air Force. So I was very blessed to be very involved in teaching (like Greg). After the Air Force I spent over 20 years as a NASA contractor and every once in a while as a part time adjunct instructor at a local university. But with all that said (sorry for the long answer), I am retiring on 11 July. I plan to just be a grandpa at that point.

Jeff,
Thanks for sharing, I bet you enjoy the being a grandpa part! What a great story.
I’ve always enjoyed teaching like both you and Greg, and often wondered if I might have liked that kind of lifestyle. I’ve been a regular volunteer instructor for the National Cotton Ginners Schools held at the three USDA-ARS Cotton Ginning Labs (where I’m currently under a temporary contract). Fortunately have been
asked to speak at some of the industry events and professional associations student chapters of the ASABE (American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers) through the years, too.
Mark,
Your field sounds very rewarding. Of course we in Alabama are very appreciative of technology that supports the cotton industry. Thanks for what you do!
