Well time to talk about the elephant in the room that hasn’t been discussed on the forum yet…
Anybody here been playing Wordle?

In case you haven’t heard about it yet:

It’s a super fun game and playable once a day… I thought I’d make this thread is so you can share your results and we can figure out who is the reigning Wordle champion on banjobenclark.com! :upside_down_face:

I am trying to figure out what would be the best first guess. Looking up the frequency of letters in order, they are:
ETAOINSRHDLUC…
If you wanted to minimize vowels, “STERN” seems like a good first guess. If you wanted the most frequent regardless of if it is a vowel, maybe NEATO?

Question: What happens if letters are repeated? If the word was “SEXES” and I put in “SEVER” what does it show for the second S (which I didn’t get)?

So the best opening guess is actually not the one with the most common letters, but the one that gets you the most information about the puzzle. I.e. there’s a balance between commonality and uncommonality for the optimal guess.

3Blue1Brown explains it way better and in much more detail than I can:


As for the repeated letters, it won’t give you information about the double letter unless it’s in your guess.
