I don’t know much about guitars but I have always thought that the Martin Guitar Co ranked amongst the highest quality

My personal favorite is Gallagher Guitar Co. I’ve played multiple different brands, and there are a lot of good ones… but here’s a few reasons I went with Gallagher:
-they came highly recommended by @BanjoBen
-they are a small company and not as common as Martin/Taylor ect. I wanted something different.
-hand made in America (Tennessee)
-for what you get, their prices are reasonable
The model I have is a G-70, which is their original rosewood guitar. The tone is amazing! Also I’m in the process of getting a custom guitar built by them, which I’m really excited about. I’ve finished picking out all the specs, and they should be able to start the build soon. Once they start, it takes about 3 months.

@JonathanFell I have played many different guitars, but I have actually never played a Gallagher. I have heard good things about them but never have played one. I guess I need to try one out! I like that you said they’re a smaller company.

I would say some Martins (though not all Martins) or Collings.

It honestly depends on the sound you want—definitely get out there and play 'em!

In 1977, I bought an Epiphone Caballero FT-130 for $60 and I still enjoy and play it to this day. I also acquired a Takamine GD-30 about 15 years ago. Which I also play as often as I can. So the guitar that you pickup, when you hold it and play it, and it speaks to you. That guitar is the best. IMHO

Best guitar brand is a tough thing… there are lots of small makers that are phenomenal. Plus, it depends on what you are looking for. There are lots of GREAT guitars that are not well suited to acoustic flatpicking. As a result, I support with ALL the suggestions above. Libby mentioned Collings… they are so consistently good it is amazing. My personal favorites are mostly Martins. If I had to pick one favorite model, it would be a D18 (but that changes from time to time depending on my mood).
