Looks like I’ll be working on this little Blues Lesson this weekend. Hopefully it will get me out of the doldrums where I have been stuck for many months. I really need some inspiration right now.

Some years ago a friend of ours, who is a pastor in TN, went about to put together a hymnal that would feature many hymns with all their original verses, along with lots of history behind the composition of the songs and Scripture references for most all of the lines. The team ended up with a hymnal of over 900 songs, many containing 10+ verses often left out of modern hymnals for sake of space.

Last year, Kyle (piano player in this vid) was combing through said hymnal and found this 19th century 7-verse song about the fall of Babylon. We sang it as a last-minute special for that year’s Bible conference. The guys were PUMPED and it ended up becoming a running gag throughout the year (the Revelation-18-themed lyrics fit any beloved hymn with 8.7.8.7.8.7 meter, which is conveniently quite a few of them).

A few weeks ago, our pastor requested it be sung again this year… so we gathered a much bigger choir of men and were happy to oblige, to say the least. :joy:

The humorous part is that we actually started off by singing Abide with Me because we were asked to prepare two songs… so we may have lulled everyone into a false sense of security. Hopefully folks weren’t too blindsided by the contrast.

I love a mens choir! That hymn is incredible.

My family likes to gather around the piano after supper and sing a few hymns. I just ordered the hymnal, will be fun to incorporate the extra info with the kiddos.

If you just listen, and not watch the video, it sounds like 8th century Saxons going off to invade Britain. Seriously, very cool.

To me the theme/focus of the song (couldn’t fully understand though but) looks like the kids in the neighborhood in our villages in those days, pretending to light/burst the burst crackers lying on the streets after the festive days, watching the reaction of the passersby - some stop, some walkaround, some turnaround etc. but you know nothing will happen as it is already burst! Today a fall is there but not for the way it is generally understood to be.

I own a seasonal business, so I’ve been doing some traveling. The first pic is my oldest son (an Air Force KC-135 pilot) and myself at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas watching my Buckeyes on the road to a National Championship. The second pic was taken the day before the inauguration last week. I go to the Florida Keys in a few days before coming back to the frozen tundra of Indiana to gear up for another season.

On a trip prior to Thanksgiving (on our way to San Antonio) it was awesome to catch up with Penny & Jon in Waco. Yeah, guess we get to Texas a lot!

Charlie Belle, Katy Lou & I are headed WAY north to Clinton, BC, to stay with a Cabin Camper/Gold Picker for 9 days. We’re going to help him run trap lines and see that country up there. We’re also holding a 1-day mini Cabin Camp for banjo/guitar for about a dozen pickers in that part of the country. Excited!

We leave next Wednesday and I’ll be away from internet for the time, so y’all hold it down around here and be kind to one another…I have no doubts

This tune was very difficult for me to play cleanly (actually decided to comp together takes because it was taking so long to get up to speed), and it’s a really cool use of arpeggios and that kind of patterned playing from a bluegrass player. Billy says that he’s been taking jazz lessons to become a more well-rounded guitarist and this tune came from one of his practice exercises.

I thought it was pretty neat that an album with literally a spacegrass tune on it (one of the most niche genres ever) hit #1 in album sales last year!

Nice. Does not sound purely like a bluegrass. Wonder if it is some type of fusion between bluegrass and Indian classical.
