Enjoy your birthday weekend @BanjoBen !!!
What are y'all up to?
That sounds like a great time.
Enjoy your bbq birthday tour with friends!
Have you been to any of the Hard Eight BBQ joints around Dallas? It’s Serious.
My wife and I ware heading to Rockygrass in Lyons, CO. It’s the first time I will be going to a festival multiple days. It’s got got a great line up: Sam Bush, Del McCoury, Dan Tyminski, Bela Fleck, Michael Cleveland, Tim O’Brien, and a bunch more. I’m really excited I’m going to break my travel mandolin and try to pick a few times too. I saw Pete Wernick is doing a jam for an hour or so Saturday morning. We aren’t camping on site but we are just a couple of miles away from the festival site.
Also, last year in Nashville we met a young bass guitar player at Rudy’s Jazz Club. She’s has been giving my wife lessons for the past few months on bass guitar. She is from the Lyons area and is visiting family this week so we are bringing her bass guitar for an in person lesson. Nothing driving from Texas to meet a Nashville bass teacher in Colorado Unfortunately an electric bass won’t work to well for the festival jams.
Well I think I learned the difference a music festival that is focused on the music and a music festival that wants to be a giant party while attending Rockygrass this weekend. I enjoyed the music but as the day went on the mobs of the folks that had been partying with various substance start talking over the tarp area. I was grumpy old man complaining about folks dancing directly in front of me outside the dancing area on Saturday night. We ended up heading home early and missing the Sunday sets. Sam Bush with a party crowd was pretty interesting. Michael Cleveland was incredible when I could see through the dancers. It was definitely a learning experience but probably won’t go back to Rockygrass.

Our bus just got home from Montana last night too!
All by itself
I wish haha. Dad and @Luke_L flew back to Billings Sunday and spent 3 days driving it home to Savannah. A brand new transmission and one month after our tour ended!
haha… Bus Make: Revolvo!
I brought my mandolin to a jam this past Saturday, it’s a regular monthly jam in Kilgore on the 2nd Saturday of the month. For the first time, I led a few songs and played some solos. My solos mostly ended up being pentatonic stuff in the main key of the song called. I had a prepared solo for “Little Girl of Mine in Tennessee” but I got the words mixed up on the 2nd verse and all my brain could do was try to get the words going back to the chorus (maybe just playing the solo would have got me back on track).
It was a good time, I’m not sure how much of my mandolin solo could be heard, it’s amazing how hard it is to hear your self when there is a big circle with lots of guitars and a few banjos. I lead “Cryin’ Holy”, “Little Girl of Mine in Tennessee”, and “Hallelujah, I"m Ready”. It’s funny, before my 3rd time, I googled the lyrics to be on my phone just to make sure I didn’t get confused again.
My wife did take video of my songs, but those may need to be posted in the “Humor” thread
After a bunch of studying, I passed my instrument rated pilot written exam this week…what a load off!
Of course it’s not done (still have to do oral and practical exams) but it’s a big step.
