What are y'all up to?

I’ve heard that he plays decent fiddle for a guitar player.

Well, I bit the bullet and got tickets to the Kenny & Amanda Smith / Purple Hulls house concert this weekend. I can’t wait to hear some great acoustic music! I will be driving west Sunday morning and hopefully get to visit my daughter and son-in-law in Tyler before hand. I’m working on getting a caffeine supply for the 3 hour drive back home that night.

Today marks 103 years since Germany signed an armistice with the Allies, initiating a ceasefire and the beginning of the Great War’s end. To all of America’s veterans, I am so thankful for the sacrifices you have made to protect the rights we enjoy in the United States of America. May God bless you, may God bless our nation, and may we never forget what our brave people have fought and died for!

On a more personal and much less important note, today also marks 4 years since I started learning the banjo. I know that my journey wouldn’t have been as fun or as successful without banjobenclark.com and the people here on this forum. Thanks to all of you who make this place what it is!

Don’t forget the British, Canadian, French, Belgian, Netherlands, Greece, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Polish, Norwegian, Australian’s, New Zealanders, South African, Soviet Union, Chinese, India, Pakistan, Nepalese, Philippines, Brazil, Mexico, Mongolia and many small nations that lent support to the Allies in the First & Second World Wars and the many conflicts around the world since… Lest We Forget.

I actually participated in a jam tonight with a fellow Gold Picker @rspillers. Ryan and his wife hosted us and we had 2 guitars, 2 banjos, 1 upright bass and 1 mandolin. First time I’ve ever played with anyone, and my attempt at Salt Creek was proof, my mind went blank on the B part. We had a lot of fun and learned as we went along. This was even the first time my wife and i played instruments together.

It’s funny how that works. I’ve played Whiskey Before Breakfast 1000 times. The first couple times in a jam it was my turn to play it, I couldn’t get past the 1st measure. Total mind blank. For me, I don’t think it was nervousness. I think it was more sensory overload. Hearing other peoples version of the melody and trying to take it in changed the focus of my brain. That was back in August. 7 or 8 jams later, that problem seems to be gone. I can still listen to the other players and hear what they are playing, but I’ve also learned to prepare myself a measure or 2 ahead of time to switch gears. Keep at it, it only gets better!

Nerves definitely played a role. Changing from rhythm to solo is something I’ve never done so figuring that out really put more in my head than I needed to think about too.

I’ve been BUSY at work. Finally taking a few vacation days to catch up around the house. The weather has been great in NC. I had a business trip earlier in the week. The guy driving put me in the back seat with his Taylor travel guitar. Best trip ever.

Ha! I made it here!..I think I’m here…have no idea how I accomplished it or if I can again.

Power went down for a day & night last Friday. When it surged back on it fired my modem (big time sparks) and screwed up a bunch of things on my computer. New modem was installed today.
Completely lost use of two browsers, clock was set to 2001, etc.; keep getting messages saying things aren’t certified or something. Using a 2008 version of Explorer right now (ughh!)

Bought new computer using Sister’s unit at her place, site said in stock, order completed, pickup scheduled, money transferred…now told it’s out of stock with no idea when I might get it & money being held with now happiness on getting it back to shop elsewhere… after several hours of calls I’m now somewhat unjoyful and quite tired.

Bummer Dave! Assuming you used a card, you can probably call your credit card folks and have them block the transaction (then cancel the transaction from the vendor).

Well, I have now managed to get Chrome back up & running on this old thing, so i’m good for now.

Much as I dislike to do any more business with “that company” I may let it just float and see when I get the merch (if I do). I really do need a new unit for today’s web world and I was quite partial to the one I ordered…we’ll see…I’m already cooling down over the whole deal. I mostly got warm over the need to pay some bills, but I’ve got that covered now.

I know the feeling Dave… I learned over the years to store all my important stuff on external hard drives, Just using the computer for OS, Internet, Email and Software Apps that need to run on the computer. Backing up anything I feel important. None the less you can never predict a crash. That reminds me I must backup my TEF files.

That hurts.

@Stuart.Gamble & @rspillers (I’m playing catch up to posts I had meant to reply on…:grimacing:!)
So happy to hear yall got together in a group to pick, that’s awesome!
As for your mind going blank, its just part of it.
Sometimes you’ll go totally blank on what song you were gonna do when it comes around to your turn, or how to kick it off, etc! It’s a good learning experience for sure & does get better the more you do it :+1:

I have two back-ups for anything important…another computer (offline only) and flash drives.

My only big problem was not getting online, which I have since fixed (had ot re-download Chrome to get things to work right.

Only thing left to do now is figure out why this machine turns itself back on after I’ve put it to sleep…

I did get my money returned to my account now also. So all is well.
