The practice video thread 🎶 - New vid added 11/8/23 - Gold Rush - Guitar

Yeah there’s a few of him doing it with Bela. A few with Wes Corbett too which are really good.

Hi @Timothy_L That was awesome pickin man. It’s not a style I am attracted to. Personally I much prefer something with a melody - that said, you did a fine job.

Did he say it could use some more Bryan Sutton licks?

No, he just gave me some good improv tips about carrying on a theme and not losing energy in certain spots! And ripped through the tune himself several times with crazy on the fly improv :neutral_face:

Here’s a song @Ol_Papa & I worked on. For the record, Chuck picks this a good bit faster than me. For this video he slowed it down. Even slowed down, these fingers were barely hanging on! Tried to vary the 2 parts of the A & B mando breaks, & doing that is pretty new for me — definitely a “practice video”… :grin:

Thanks everyone for all the :purple_heart: !

@Archie - haha, I’m still the same shy mando picker, nothings changed there!

Thank you @Severin ! You’ve got two videos in here, & so do I… lookin forward to your next practice vid when you get around to it!

@CalebEllis - Thanks!
I bet you will knock this tune out of the park, I’ve seen some of your picking :grin:! Would love to see your version here - there’s probably something I can learn from watching it! I’ve always played both A&B parts exactly the same way, (I’m like that w almost all fiddle tunes actually…) so it’s been a really big challenge to add in a variation, even the little bitty variations I did in this song… I’ll just keep working on it!

@JohnM - Thank you!
Got any practice material to share with us?

Big appreciation to @Ol_Papa who is playing the banjo with me in the video :+1: and agreed to me posting it.

Who’s next???

As I said earlier in this thread I haven’t recorded any videos in a long while. This one was recorded back in 2014. I haven’t spent much time on this tune since. I learned this version from Iain E MacLachlan’s book Celtic Tune Encyclopaedia for 5-String Banjo and whilst I know the bagpipe tune pretty well I have been listening to it my whole life you’ll see that I am struggling through this Melodic arrangement trying to figure out where to place my fingers. Later this year I plan on revisiting this tune. My other banjo teacher Heath Joyce in Australia has just published his new lesson of this tune (see below) It’s a traditional Scottish Reel and I am keen to learn more Scottish tunes. This is my motivation to revisit this one.

I should add that Iain MacLachlan is an old personal friend of mine. If you are interested his book Celtic Tune Encyclopaedia for 5-String Banjo it’s available from Mel Bay or other sources online

Really like that tune (Flowers of Edinburgh) Archie. Have not heard it before. Many Appalachian Mountain fiddle tunes have their basis in Celtic and Scottish tunes. Ricky Skaggs tells the story of doing a series of concerts in Scotland and afterwards going to local pubs and other gathering places to jam with the folks there. He was able to join right in with the traditional tunes because of how close it was to what he had played all his life back home in Kentucky.

Yes, many pubs across Scotland and Ireland have tradition folk sessions. So Ricky’s band would be well received. Bill Monroe found this out on his visit to Scotland many years ago and long before I took up the banjo.

Your improvement is leaps and bounds, I know I can’t get there, but we’ll see. I, in turn, am looking for shaky’s! :slight_smile:

We all gotta start somewhere. No matter what distractions are around us we need to stay focused. A young 8yo Sierra Hull shows us all how.

There have been several songs where I had them 95% down but never quite got the whole thing. Trying to revisit those and polish them up to expand my jam repertoire. Today it was the dreaded Rocky Top :slight_smile:

@Shad - nice job on Rocky Top!
I know exactly what you mean about the “95%” factor… I’ve got several tunes in the same situation. Revisiting them later on, even wayyy later on, is a great way to get that last 5% down. Thx for posting!!
