The practice video thread 🎶 - New vid added 11/8/23 - Gold Rush - Guitar

Hey folks - been hearing more often ppl comenting they’re encouraged or that they like & enjoy when somebody posts a video of their playing. Also I love the threads like the one Michael Mark, Libby (and theres been others i cant think of right now) regarding “what are ya working on” kind of thing.

John made a comment in another thread today about ppl posting vids, and named me & others. I mentioned I only had a couple sketchy practice videos, nothing polished and clean. Archie said go for it.

Well that got me thinking. If I’m gonna post that stuff, let’s all be in on it. Let’s do a “post your practice” videos thread open to everyone. So here’s yalls formal invitation:

Won’t you please join me, and add to this thread, a video of your practice session(s) or songs and ideas you’re currently working on, figuring out, or in my case bumbling along… I personally like to see what everyone’s working on - often I pick along with members videos and try out new songs.

It wouldn’t be right to invite everyone to post without putting something up myself. So here we go to kick it off. Mind you this is a “practice” video thread, so work here isn’t expected to be perfect. Constructive criticism is welcomed as is any tips or suggestions.

Reischman’s version of Little Maggie:
It’s got a lot of timing and mechanical issues that need work, but somewhat somewhat resemble the song…

What it’s supposed to sound like:

Ok, done it, so who’s gonna be next???

Good%20Job @Simone

For my sins I haven’t recorded anything for about a year or so now. I had a Windows upgrade and it screwed up my video recording software and I have not got round to fixing things.

However this was the very first video I recorded and uploaded to YouTube 8 years ago.

It’s pretty rough but I encourage others to upload their videos.

This is a great idea! I might share something sometime. I tend to be really self conscious about my playing, I like to polish it up to the best of my ability before sharing, so I never really film my practice

Thank you @Archie ! I remember the nerves I had recording my very 1st video. Nice work there, & thanks for posting!

Please do!!
We’re all really self conscious
I film some of mine to spot stuff that I know is off but not sure exactly what or how. In the moment of playing its hard (for me) sometimes to tell.

@simone, I didn’t expect you to post so quick but you did it. I think you have keen ear to reproduce from some music! Good job!

@Archie, I like some memories (how I did years ago etc.)! Good stuff and great arrangement!

This is a cool idea. It’s very tough to post something you know isn’t quite ready but what a good opportunity to get over your fears ha. Here’s one I’ve been working on.

@Simone, excellent and great idea for a thread!

Wow @scott_wilson! Did you figure that out from the recording? Good job either way!

@Archie, I enjoyed that, sounds good! Do you still play that?

I remember that one too @Simone now nothing can hold you back. I think having BanjoSon & GeetarSon is an added bonus for you and helps with any self-confidence issues you had back in those early day’s. I was the exact same when that little light came on I went into panic mode. I just stopped breathing. After a while I left the camera running during practice and soon I forgot it was even there. But I can tell you when I recorded that video it must have been my 500th attempt and I was a nervous wreck the whole time.

Hi @Mike_R

Thanks for asking. I’ve not played that tune for about 7 years. Been so busy with other projects that almost everything I played back then I am not playing now. What I will say is looking back at it I see and hear the mistakes, The fumbled notes, the tension etc.

Most of what I am studying now is in the Key of D - Standard G tuning with the capo on the 5th. I am really interested in learning D licks in the 1st position things that involve multiple Hammer - On’s and Pull Offs (Slides if there are any?) - I get frustrated watching Pro Players showing off those fancy D licks but never can find TABs for them to study.

I have most of Alan Munde’s DVDs and I’ll be going back to revisit them soon. As I recall Alan taught some tunes in the Key of D in Standard G tuning without the capo.

Always on the look out for a new challenge. The Old Rugged Cross was way beyond my skill level at the time. But there is only so many times the brain can tolerate Boil dem cabbage down or Cripple Creek before enough is enough. I am kinda like that with most tunes I learn. I work on them till I can play them end to end without a train wreck then move to the next challenge and forget to go back and keep them polished. I think if I went back to ORC I’d need to start again from scratch and that would frustrate me.

Thanks Kevin! A friend asked for a recording of that song for a remote wedding out in the woods. This was during the peak of CV lockdowns and we couldn’t go play for the ceremony. I did guitar and mandolin tracks and a friend did violin. I am think of revisiting it. The world needs more banjo.
