Practice stool

Hello all First let me explain, I am a woodworked/ craftsman of over 50 years, and a beginner banjo player. I have seen some great wooden music stands and stools for guitars banjo etc. I am drafting my own plans for a few of both. The music stand has a kind of standard height so no problem there I plan to design them with a double shelve under rack. any other ideas please let me know. the stools what I would ask you is what height stool you like the more of you that respond will help me to set the different heights I need to look at. Also I plan to add a drawer under the seat to hold picks tools etc. anything else you would like to see please add it in your information. HERE IS THE BIG NOTE i AM NOT TRYING TO SELL ANY THING TO ANY OF YOU I am looking for information. If it works out and I like what I build I will contact BanjoBen about that. Your help with is greatly appreciated. And Ben if you don’t want this posted please take it down and again Thanks to all.

I think that we’d have quite a variety in heights unless it could be adjustable. I want my thighs to be level with the ground, especially playing dobro. I’m 6’4" so my stool would be taller than most others looking for the same thing. Maybe you can make it a bit taller and have some kind of adjustable foot rest? That may be getting too complex. I’m interested to see what you come up with!

like the idea of an adjustable footrest. Ben do you the same stool to practice all instruments? And if you wood please give me the height of the seat from the floor if you have your feet on floor when playing or from rest to seat thanks again, that is if you have the time ( I get excited working on a new project) Thanks again God Bless

Sure! Mine’s right at 19-20". It’s an office chair that adjusts. I keep it higher for working then drop to the 19" range when I record or play.

A nice leather with foam padding for upholstery makes long practice sessions more comfortable.

i would need an extra extra tall since I am 7ft 1 in tall i cannot ever find a chair or a stool that i am comfortable on they all feel like my knees are hitting my chin and it would have to be heavy duty for my big butt

Hi Don do you want you knees level with you hip or lower then fora custom build a worker would need your measurements of floor to back of knee and how wide the seat needs to carry your backside

Cool idea I have not done a lot of upholstery work but I have done a lot of leather work I will look into it thanks.

A Back rest would be nice also about mid back height but the problem there they would all have to be custom made as well

@Sailor if I were to purchase one I would want one that my knees are level not feeling like my chin is resting on my knees my pants length is 51 1/2 by the way

I look like a chicken in shorts so I do not ever wear shorts

You are right on the back rest the whole stool would be yours alone due to your height and trying to make it ajustable takes away from the flow of the form sometime if you like please measure with the type shoes you wear when playing and measure from floor to the middle of the back of your leg as I’m drafting I would enjoy working on a stool time this

I’m 6’1” (used to be 6’2”, then I got old.)
My noggin is always getting bumped on stuff. I can only imagine the headaches you’ve had in our standardized world!
And Ben looks so much shorter in his videos.

@BanJoe I have bumped my head more than once, I am surprised I even think straight sometimes

And my funny bone,I do not know who started calling it a funny bone because to me there is nothing funny about it when you bump it,it hurts like the dickens LOL

@Sailor I will tell you I made some sitting stumps when my wife and I was living off grid out of alligator juniper the rounds were 2.5-3 foot in diameter the one I made for me was 41 1/2 inches tall because that was where it was comfortable for me to sit and my feet were flat on the ground and my knees were level with my waist if that helps
I wish I would have grabbed them when we sold the place we used them to sit around a camp fire pit

41 and a 1/2 wow I got something for my mind to work on. Not sure if you didn’t know or were just enjoying the joke but the reason it called the funny bone is it’s technical name is the humorous and it is believed it is an on pun on the technical name.

@Sailor, the adjustable backrest is a must for me. I can’t practice for very long at all without one. I’ve seen some on drummer thrones on occasion.

@Sailor my wife sure didn’t think it was funny when she got hit by the hit and run driver it literally broke her humorous in half to the point one half was shifted 5 inches out from the other half they had to put a titanium rod through it down through the shoulder and pin it back together and then three months later they had to remove that same rod because it came loose they then installed plates and screws to pin it back together
