Poor Florida

Hurricanes are bad. Sometimes recovering from a hurricane is even worse.
Give me a blizzard any day.

Our prayers are with the poor & unfortunate in Florida, who lack many of the resources needed to protect themselves & recover from this storm.

I don’t really care what happens to the wealthy Florida residents who will simply write off their loss at tax time.

The rougher part for us has usually been the power outages. We’re inland and haven’t had problems with flooding, though we did once have a large tree miss our house by a foot or so!

Wow, I forgot that y’all are in Florida. Hope you stay safe.

We’ll almost certainly be fine. It’s far less dangerous when you’re more inland like us.

That’s what I mean about the recovery being worse than the storm. Storms last several hours & power outages can go on for days, if not weeks.
It makes the refrigerator smell funny, among other things.

I rode out a few when I lived in South Florida. I am a meteorology nerd, but they are not fun when you are in it and the destruction is depressing to see. I spent one night just mopping the floor where the rain blew in under the door (I was on the 3rd floor)… all night. Then the power was out for a few days. Just not fun, but I was one of the lucky ones… I was merely inconvenienced. Agreed on all the prayers for those in harms way tonight down there.

Hi Guy’s
I read a lot about you folks having long power outages due to bad weather. Lately I have seen some YouTube videos pop up on my channel reviewing these little devices which could provided some relief in an emergency until power is restored. They can be charged with a solar panel.

Disclaimer: I should add I have no experience of these. I just found the reviews interesting and thought I would pass on the info in the hope it could help someone.

Interesting. FWIW, I always ask “How much?” before I ask “What does it do?”

It costs $1,000 plus $500 for the solar panels for recharging for the Delta 2 model, which weighs about 27 lbs.

The Delta Pro is a much more powerful unit, weighs 100 lbs and costs $3600.

Hi @BanJoe Sure, obviously power output will determine the price tag. There will be other manufacturers too. I am simply floating the idea not recommending any specific brand.

As for what it does. It’s a portable power bank. You can run lights, fridge, charge your phone. computer etc.

I understand, and I’m not nit-picking. Merely expanding on the info you provided.

I share your sentiments for the poor Banjoe, and wish all of them well that they may get through this, but rich or poor, doesn’t matter to me, just hope for the best for everyone.

If you’re talking a tax write off would be a casualty loss on a Schedule A. That type of a loos is subject to limitations, which doesn’t usually work out very well as a tax saving vehicle for the person with the loss. Any loss is sure to be far greater than the tax savings. Am guessing most wealthy people have insurance, in which case would negate the casualty loss provision. I guess insurance rates will now rise thus affecting everyone. But I will concede the rich are in a better position than the poor provided they live to tell about it and are not seriously injured.

Fortunately, Florida has it’s Governor Ron Disantis. But in spite of him being the best Governor in the entire nation, and hopefully the next President of The United States, even he can’t control the weather.

My thoughts and prayers also go out to those in IAN’s path.

Though I live on the other coast, i am connected in part. One man I have never met in person, a Kevin B, lives right where IAN made landfall.
Met on a bicycle related forum. We share an interest in bicycles, but also banjos and faith.
He spent time on the “Banjo Hangout” in the past, and I did too, as “banjokent”.

I read his last post on RRB, and he thought he would be OK. but that was before a direct hit.

In any crisis, the worst part is not knowing.
I saw an interesting passage recently, from a combat soldier.
“I asked God to protect the battalion from further harm. I knew he would not.
I asked him to bring abuses to light. I knew he would not.
I finally asked him for grace.”

Yes, grace applies, for at the end of the story, God Wins !

My favorite part about Desnatis is how he voted àgainst hurricane Sandy relief in NY and New Jersey but now he’s asking for federal help for Florida.

To be fair, he voted against those packages because he said they were “fiscally irresponsible.” Give him the opportunity to reject aid for Florida for the same reason.
Or give him the opportunity to demonstrate that he has matured & has discovered that sometimes life isn’t so simple as bumper sticker logic.

And to be honest, this Forum is no place for politics since banjos & geetars don’t care about Red or Blue, black or white, red or yellow, Ford or Chevy.
All they want to do is their best for you. We should do our best for them.
