Duh! thanks man!

@Jake do you got any tips for someone who would like to learn how to play like you?

Jake hasn’t been active on the forum for a long time, but yes, what a super picker!

Jake’s definitely influenced by Tony Rice, Kenny Smith, David Grier, and blends that with a lot of chromaticism and general uniqueness. His playing really mimics his personality in that it’s actually kind of laden with humor… playing lots of creative (and sometimes goofy) licks to take you by surprise.

Technique-wise, he’s pretty much a straight up alternate picker, so make sure to practice alternate pick directions when you play. There will probably be a guitar lesson on that before too long, but here’s a mandolin lesson covering it—the concept is the same:

Beyond that, a lot of what makes him unique he makes up himself, and really the best thing to do is transcribe him by ear (as goes for any picker you want to imitate). I would also recommend learning some Tony licks as well, which of course you’ll hear in Jake’s playing.

Also make sure to check out his YouTube channel, he has some older lesson videos on there which are fun:

There are (as I’m sure you know) a few lessons with Jake on the site, these are the two that dive the most into his playing:

@Jake is honestly one of my favorite pickers! He’s so creative and what I’ve heard him play has been really tasty and inspiring.
