Finger style picking

I’m just getting started into finger style picking. I noticed that there’s many different styles out there, like banjo style, thumb and two fingers. Some people use a pick and fingers and so on. My question is while learning new songs from tablature should I just choose one style of picking rather than jumping around from style to style and just adjust the picking pattern on each new song I learn rather than following the suggested one.
I just don’t want to pick up any bad habits out of the gate. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Jeff!!! I’m sure a guitarist will be along shortly to answer your question.

Nope  You may concentrate on a style for a while but I recommend exposing yourself to new styles and trying your “hand” at them.

+1 to what Ben said. I was a fingerstyle guy (3 fingers and a thumb) for a very long time before trying banjo. I thought only using 2 fingers on banjo was going to be a bear, but it really wasn’t a big deal.
