Most don’t give Steve Earle much credit but he ranks up there pretty high in my mind in being a song writer…this is a song that has “bluegrass” written all over it…not only in the sound but in the subject line also.

Oh, I am guitar-less tonight…hanging out in a Memphis hotel, momma wanted to “walk” for her masters even though she technically graduated with it a year or so ago, so after she walks in her University of Tenn Allied Health ceremonies tomorrow it’s a night or so on the town and hanging out on Beale street…you know that street that literally killed the music on Broadway Street in Nashville when a young feller named Elvis came along!

I’ll be “Walking in Memphis” humming the same named song by Marc Cohn.

If any of you fellers want me to pick up a velvet Elvis poster for ya then met me know  …In the meantime enjoy the Steve Earl song below!

Great song Oldhat! I have a lot of coal miners in my family being from Virginia, so that song hits home for me. I’m a Del McCoury fan too, love their song “All Aboard”.

Have fun in Memphis…and I’ll have to pass on the velvet Elvis.

Hey Oldhat,
Eat some rendezvous BBQ for me while you are there. I like the Steve Earle song. For some reason it sparked a mental link to another song I like to play. It’s Tecumseh Valley by Townes Van Zandt. It sounds like it is a traditional song that has been around for much longer than it has. I think writing like that is much easier said than done.
I typed it up with the chord progression embedded in the lyrics so that the formatting won’t get lost:
C Well the name she gave
F Was Caro C line
F The daughter of a C miner
And her F ways were free, and it C seemed G/B to Am me
that G sunshine walked be F side her

It sounds like it is a traditional song that has been around for much longer than it has.

— End quote

Seems like that describes a lot of Townes’ songs.

Here’s you a good Grateful Dead song, Larry. I like playing along to this one.

Capo 2:
C, Am, C, Am, F, C, G, C. I like walking down from the “C” to the “Am” by playing the second fret on the A string then open A string to give it that defined sound. You’ll see what he is doing. I need to post how many measures each chord lasts, but it’s pretty easy to see.

The song starts at 24:14 in the video. Rosa Lee Mcfall.

Good stuff, Shawn! The Stringdusters are great, and I hadn’t seen that video before.

I’ve actually been sneaking Rosa Lee McFall into my weekly jams nights. It was written by Charlie Monroe, so even though it’s primarily known as a Dead song, I can still slip it in as a Monroe song.

I don’t play it exactly like they do in this video though (never stuck the F chord in there) so this version will be fun to play with.

Here’s y’all a little inspiration on The Old Home Place.

This is the first vid I’ve uploaded to youtube, man 3 hours for two minutes of video! My Go Pro camera was going out of tune like a warped up VHS tape, especially right at the start of my break! HAHA! …which was a little off time, oh well. I ran out of memory after 2 minutes, didn’t realize I had it set to 720p HD. Now that the excuses are out of the way, on with the show! Ha!

P.S. I’m breathing, I’ve just got a mouth full of snuff.

Sweet. Nice job Shawn!

Thanks Mike!

Oh so many thanks for posting these clips, they’re great. A wonderful idea for those of us who like playing along. Happy pickin’ to all.
Gordon.

NIce pickin’, Shawn. Just wish you were a little louder and your backing track a little softer. I got a long way to go to get this break up to your level.

Thanks Larry!

Yeah, my computer speakers were right behind the camera and I didn’t realize they were drowning out my playing so much. I need a whole new set up for recording.

EDIT: Might as well post up two more then I’ll give it a rest for a while and let you guys catch up. These guys have about ten songs I play with a lot. They go by “bigthreeorfour” on youtube.

Gospel Bluegrass:

Shawn, I enjoyed your playing, good job. Wish you were nearby, we’d have fun pickin!

very nice pickin Shawn …awesome …inspires me to keep on pickin’ …thanks for posting!!!

Thanks guys!

Yeah, that was some good stuff back when they had Gram Parsons in the band.

Larry I pulled the post, tried and tried to embed the video but I guess my dumb!$$ can’t seem to do it!

It was for the record “I am a Pilgrim” via the Byrds.

Oldhat, click the video button right beside the font color in your post and paste the youtube link between the tags.

Came across a pretty good Bill Cheatum video. I don’t know anything about fiddles, but I really like playing rhythm over what he’s doing, sounds great. Learned the rhythm playing along with Ben’s tef file.

Something doesn’t sound right to me on the B part. It goes G, C, D, G then G, C, G, D then G, C, D, G then G, C, D, G. So you’ve got G, C, D, G three times in a row? Maybe it’s the melody I’m hearing that makes it sound different every time? How do y’all play it?

Shawn, you have it all correct (except, of course, it is actually in the key of A).
