Discuss the Banjo lesson: Upgrade Your Vamping

https://banjobenclark.com/lessons/upgrade-your-vamping-banjo-intermediate

It’s time to revamp your vamping! Vamping may seem a bit dull at first, but there’s a whole world of licks, tricks, and dynamics that separate the best vampers from the rest. We’ll explore some of those in this lesson and get you on a roll!

Hi Ben, Great lesson. One of my most memorable moments at one of your cabin camps was when I was vamping in a jam circle with KSB and she said good job. It was a proud moment for me but I have always wanted to add more than just my normal shape one vamp in the key of G. You have given me much more variety to my backup now. I knew I wanted to do more but at the time didn’t have the experience to add anything more and stay in time. Thanks Ben

Great lesson. I really appreciated the permission to get a little sloppy on the square roll before a chord change. I was trying too hard and it never sounded good.

BTW, what are your band settings for your backing track? I really liked them. Mine have too much mandolin or something.

They’re just the stock settings at jamtrainer.com!

Holy cow! You used my app for your lesson!? Man, that’s like the greatest compliment I could possibly ask for. Thank you!

I adjust the volume on mandolin and banjo down and make the guitar and bass prominent to better hear the chords.

Thanks Mike, and welcome to the forum!

Report enough issues or ideas back to me that I incorporate into it and it could stay in beta for you forever.

Hi Ben. Thanks for the lesson. When I do the pentatonic lick I find it hard to muffle the notes. Is it ok to play them clearly, but not loudly?

@ChrisM I can’t remember exactly what I said in the lesson, but I don’t think I usually muffle those notes when I play them. You’re good!

One thing that seems to be an added benefit by product: The vamp, the chicks are a bit louder. Played with more pop. It seems to carry over into my rolls…popping that 1st string more and it seems to give a lot more life or jump or energy to my roll. Lot more fun.

Yes! I think that first string, when played on the backbeat and emphasized, is the key to an increased energy.

Great lesson for 4/4 but what do we do in 3/4? Play triplets?
