Discuss the Banjo lesson: How Great Thou Art Build-a-Break
Danke
My wife passed away at the end of March. While I have only been playing banjo for less than a year ans still a beginner, I started to learn this song at the end of April. I just about have the first chorus down now at it has helped my mind and soul to sit and play this tune over and over when I am having a hard time.
Hi, @conibear75, welcome to the forum! So sorry to hear about your loss! I’ll be praying that God will comfort you during this time!
Hi @conibear75 Stan to @BanjoBen 's Forum. I am so sorry to hear of your loss and glad that you can draw comfort from studying this lesson. It’s one of my favourites and fairy easy to learn.
Hey @conibear75, thank you for sharing. I’m so encouraged to hear how this song and lesson can bring you joy in the midst of your loss.
As your username suggests, are you a trapper?
I play this once a day along with the mp3. It’s good foe the soul. Thanks so much for this lesson.
Welcome to the forum, @lesliebush11! I love this arrangement, too! I’ve just got to sit down and learn it!
Hi @lesliebush11 Leslie to @BanjoBen’s Forum. I agree it’s such a great tune to pick I am hoping Ben will add a easy version of the Old Rugged Cross some day
Time… I just don’t have enough of it!!! Plus, I’ve got a lot of changes coming up that’s gonna limit my time even more, unfortunately!
I think I learned the first part it in about an hour. The second part took a little longer and I didn’t tackle it till a few days later.
Ok! I’ll get to it as soon as I can!
I really love this song and been working hard learning it, in the second solo after the bar G pinch and then one forward roll afterwards , I have trouble sliding into the D with the index just before going back to G, I cannot do the bar with my index finger doing the D any suggestions on another way I been sliding my middle on the first sting and index on the second at the same time and putting my ring on the third and pinky on the first when I start there but I break timing getting behind any advice would be appreciated thanks, and God bless.
Hi @blhrcs Harley
So I am a little confused what you asking here. Do you have an impairment on your index finger that prevents you from using it?
I can’t think of any other way to play that three string pinch other than the way @BanjoBen teaches it.
The slide in measure 46 is a tough one, I have difficulty nailing it every time. What I do is practice playing the slide 9/10 as Ben demonstrates it. (Watch his fingers closely) I then focus on putting my pinkie down on the first string at the 12 fret, then shifting my index to a bar position covering the first two strings then adding my middle finger on the 3rd string 11 fret. In that order as I play through the roll. Second time through I lift the pinkie. It’s all down to Patience Perseverance & Practice.
I encourage you to post a video and let Ben see what’s causing you trouble he will be able to analyse any problems you have and offer some pointers to work on.
Do you mean at the end of measure 46? It’ll give a different sound, but you could play that 10 on the 5th string, using your thumb to fret it.
Yes that’s it
Sorry but I am not that good on this new technology IPhones and computers lol. When I do the bar with the index like Ben does and put my middle finger on the third string I mute the second and first does this explain it better?
Hi Harley
Ok muting strings is to be expected since your just learning. It takes a while and some adjustment in order to overcome this. You just got to work at it.
