Blown Away.... Jake Workman Master class

I have taught the CAGED system for many years, but will confess that until now I did not see how it could be made useful or practical. I knew it made sense to me, but I had trouble teaching it in a way that made sense for my students - even though I have been teaching almost 25 years. I had pretty much set it aside, as it became problematic to me. After tonights fretboard mapping discussion from Jake, the fire is lit once again to dig into this system. Ben - thanks for lining Jake up for this - it was hands-down the best thing I have seen in a long time.

I guess ChatGPT has “heard” enough folks complain about that B-String and AI just removed that string :joy:

Jake has the best way of teaching the CAGED system and unlocking the fretboard. In my opinion nobody else explains the fretboard better. He’s also such a great teacher because he knows how to pack so much in and make it practical too.

I think so too, at first it sounded like he talking Chinese, but after watching, pausing and replaying the video 50 times, lol,it all made good sense. Does anyone know of a book out there which teaches what he talked about? I know there are a million books on guitar theory, but i’m looking for one that really stands out for what Jake was teaching. Thanks…

If Jake didn’t pass out his sheet of Caged licks you should purchase it from his website if he has it up there. Otherwise it would be worth getting a lesson with him and having him share it with you then

He said a few things that just supplied the missing pieces. Loved it. Hope you’re doing well, my friend.

Just had a lesson with a retired Doctor who is also on this site. He will be attending the Athens camp this April. He just watched the Jake workman video. And he and I were both stumbling over each other being excited about what Jake and Ben put out in that video. We decided that the key to unlocking CAGED was focusing on numbers not note letter names. Find the first tier notes - root, the third, the fifth in each shape then find the second tier notes - the 2nd, fourth, the sixth and the seventh. The 3rd tier being the “blue notes” b3, b5, b7. I actually feel pretty stupid about not realizing this earlier. But I realized I grew up in music reading notes never thinking in terms of numbers. So I don’t feel bad. But I gotta say… I haven’t been as excited in a long time as I am right now about playing the guitar. I have always loved the guitar, but this is exciting stuff to me. Wish I could make it to the Athens camp now. Maybe next year.
