Hey Banjo Ben!

Here are some questions for Jacob Metz:

How to improvise a solo over an unfamiliar song?

How to make solos sound like a coherent musical idea?

How to play without a capo in closed key shapes? Key of F? Key of B?

How to create fill licks that complement the vocals?

How to get clean pulloffs and hammer-ons?

Thank you so much!

This looks very interesting. My question would be, Is there a relationship (from a technique aspect) between Dobro and lap steel Guitar? Put, more plainly, can the same techniques used to play Dobro be used to play the lap steel? What would the major differences be? They appear very similar in the way they are played.

Looking forward to this. Even though I don’t play Dobro, I’m always curious and fascinated how the different instruments relate to each other and what techniques from one can be applied to another. Thank you for making these possible.

I watched the playback stream. Great stuff, I enjoyed it. Even though I don’t play Dobro, I learned helpful concepts and even history about the Dobro (Resonator Guitar) instrument. Ben’s comments about timing and the flexibility the Dobro can have with timing, esp. for solos is very interesting and reminds me of a Tony Rice video where Tony talks about timing, where he relates something someone else told him, the best way he heard to think about timing in a band, is like a group of people are in a box car, the train is moving at the same speed, but each person in the box car can move back and forth, but every one is moving at the same overall speed (same speed as the train). I am paraphrasing from memory, and may have left out some good points that Tony made. If you are interested, I believe you can google search for the video easily, or I believe I have the video link saved, and I will be happy to share the link.

Long time Gold member here. I’m mainly a banjo player but also play rhythm guitar, and learning to sing lead. . About a year ago I bought a used gold tone dobro. I love it ! The video was well done, interesting and. Informative. I’d some more dobro videos.

Did you see that Ben is hosting Jacob Mets at his Fall Camp in Kilgore? If you can swing it, you should come on out. It’s gonna be great!
