Hmmm… I guess it depends on what I am recording. For a podcast (vocal use) the SM7(B) is a wonderful microphone, but you can also use most kick drum dynamic microphones as they will often have a similar sensitivity and frequency response profile (smooth in the vocal range). For recording acoustic guitar, I prefer a condenser cardioid like the SM81 or possibly one of the large diaphram condenser cardioids like the MXR 4000 or if you have more money than Elan, then maybe a Neumann. Live PA performance calls for a very narrow cardioid dynamic (hypercardioid) mostly, but sometimes you can get away with a condenser as long as the main speakers are placed properly.
