What is a banjo player?

That’s a great definition. I’ve always thought it was funny how different people react to the banjo. Some tap their foot and enjoy it, while others kind of smirk and snub their nose. About 80% of the time, there is a reference to canoe trips or “squeal like a pig”. Other musicians who don’t play Bluegrass will comment about how hard it must be to play banjo.
every Halloween I dress up like a hillbilly and play banjo on the porch. It is funny how many people will just walk on past my house and not stop. Last Halloween, a lady said, “great Ukulele playing!”

I’ve done the same thing & got the same reaction. To make matters worse, I am also a canoeist, so I’ll have a paddle nearby. It scares them more than monsters, clowns or politicians.

If you play a “yee-haw” song, you get a yee-haw reaction. Get out of bluegrass and you get two reactions. First, the “I didn’t know you could play that on a banjo” crowd. The other is the Angry Mob, booing because “that ain’t bluegrass.”
Not even accordion players have to take such abuse! No one yells at them “That ain’t a polka!”

Thank you, Lester & Earl, for “Polka on the Banjo.”
