What are y'all up to?

I recently was in Tennessee and got to go to Gallagher Guitar Co. Got a tour of the shop, got my pickguard changed on my G70, met David Mathis and got to play some amazing guitars!

Also went to Carter Vintage Guitars. Could have been there for days, but unfortunately only had around 45 minutes. Played some more amazing guitars- Collings, Santa Cruz, Boucher, ect. Super awesome place.

Epic! David is such a sweet guy. What was your favorite at Carter’s?

Oof I don’t know! I think the Collings I tried were probably my favorite. There was a Boucher bluegrass goose that was also amazing.

Nice. I’ve never been to the Gallagher shop but Carter’s is always fun. I try to get to Gruhn’s once a year when we go to SPBGMA.

@Michael_Mark Hey Michael, I was wondering why the Elixir strings are do much higher than D’addrio? Are the Elixir just better? Or something else?

The Elixir Nanowebs are only priced $1.99 higher than the comparable D’Addarios (the XS), and I’d imagine that it could end up the other way around when different sales happen, etc.

If you mean why they’re priced much higher than standard D’Addarios (e.g. EJ17), it’s because Elixirs are coated strings and standard D’Addarios (or any other brand) are not. Elixirs and other coated strings like D’Addario XS have a special coating that makes them last much longer and offer a different tone that some people like and some people don’t.

@Michael_Mark Thanks for the quick response and explanation!

@Bravesfanchan I’ve used both coated and uncoated strings, and personally I do not like the coated. They feel really slippery to me and I have a hard time keeping my fingers in the right spot… but if you haven’t tried them yet, you should get a set and see if you like them.

Actually I like the Santa Cruz strings, and I think they do have some type of coating. They feel nice, but they are pretty expensive.
But most coated strings are not my favorite.

@JonathanFell I think the ones I usually use are the Elixir custom light. I think those are coated. I just ordered a few sets of EJ-22. I got them because @BanjoBen recommends them. I like the custom lights for lead, but they’re to light for just playing. I like more of a medium for all around. Me and my dad have alike guitars. So, I normally put different strings on both for different purposes. I’m also bringing out the Baby Taylor for the first time in 3 years, so I am looking forward to that.

@JonathanFell Do you know what specific string of Santa Cruz?

These are the Santa Cruz ones I use:

Nice! I’ve tried those as well and I like them.

@JonathanFell Thanks! Might shoot you a short video or something via PM! How long do those strings normally last?

I’m not exactly sure how long they last… Next time I use them I’ll try to keep track of that.
I currently am using EJ-19s (light top and medium bottom), which don’t last super long, but they are $10.
