Utility Rolls

Banjo Ben,

In your lesson video “Utility Rolls” under Lesson Videos - “The Utility Roll” start around the 11:40 min mark. Going from G to C to D. When you go from G to C the tab indicates 1st finger on the second string. You picked that string with your thumb when you first started the C utility roll. Is it more efficient to use your thumb or first finger or is either one correct? Thank you.

@Cindy_G I haven’t watched the Utility Rolls video you’re talking about (at least not recently) and I’m not Ben (he’s probably on a trail up in Glacier National right about now, looking for another grizzly bear), but here’s my 2 cents…there will be times that you want to pick that with your index, there will be times when you want to pick that with your thumb, and there will be times that it doesn’t really matter. It all depends on where you’re going next. So, my advice is to get equally proficient at using both the thumb and the index there.

Hello Banjo Ben!

You played an amazing short demonstration in your Intro to Banjo Backup Utility Rolls “All Together” around the 7min 28 second mark that you made up. I have listened to it many times and even slowed it down, but still having difficulty figuring it out. I know how extremely busy you are, but I was wondering if you would be willing to notate it with tab. It sounds so good to me and that’s how I would like to play the song. Thank you very much!

Thank you so much Michael, you’re the best! I really appreciate you taking your time to do this for me. I’m so excited to get started and learn this version. We play at assisted living facilities and memory care facilities and the residents have requested this song. This is such a great backup!
