Up the neck backup

I’ve been working on the Waypoints lessons, but I’ve not done them all yet. Is actual up the neck backup discussed at some point in those lessons? If not, where is that covered?

In addition, is there a rhyme or reason to what chord shapes you use for vamping, or is it just whatever sounds good?

Great question. I have it on my list to do a lesson using the Waypoints to play an actual song, to show them in action.

I don’t remember what all I cover in this lesson, but there’s an entire collection of lessons that deal with backup, some more explicitly than others. Go to the banjo page, scroll down to collections on the left margin, and select “backup & rhythm”.

Yes, and yes. I will choose chord shapes based on what sounds the best combined at times with efficiency–which chord makes the most sense to use according to the song and where it’s headed.
