TV Tricks of Banjo Magic in Mayberry

Saw this on YouTube and had to tip my hat to the person that spotted this move!

Interesting observation for the banjo players out there: Never noticed before but the banjo kick off to salty dog is actually an edited-in cut of Doug playing the “B-part” of Banjo in the Hollow. Notice his capo is at the 2nd fret and he is playing in the key of A. Salty Dog is played here in the key of D and Douglas capos at the 7th fret. Actually, there is another YT video of them doing a reunion on Nashville Now with Ralph Emery where they do this tune and you can see Doug kicking it off like here, but capo’d up to the 7th fret.”

It’s a bit tough to see because the video is not the best quality, but he’s right!

I wonder why they did that?

I wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t pointed it out. TAKE 10.000

It’s show biz. It’s never really what you think you see. The director probably wanted a good picture of just Doug without any other distractions. So he sets up his camera, tells Doug to “Play the beginning of a song for us.” Doug probably already had his capo on the 2nd fret & didn’t want, or have, the time to change it, knowing the music is always dubbed in later in post-production.
That’s why in the credits you often see “Re-Recording by Glen Glenn Sound”
The Glen Glenn Sound company services have been used on over 20,000 movies and television series episodes.

As GK Chesterton observed, “Truth is stranger than fiction, because we write fiction to suit ourselves.”
