I just wanted to send my support to those in Texas & other such places that are not accustomed to what we refer to as “a little chilly.”
Cold is dangerous. Stay dry to stay warm. Perspiration can cause you to develop hypothermia, which leads to bad decision making, which leads to bad things happening.
If possible, avoid wearing cotton. It traps moisture, which evaporates and cools you, which is why cotton is great in hot weather. In cold weather, “cotton kills.” Wool, on the other hand, actually generates heat when it gets wet.
If you are staying in your car to keep warm, keep two windows opened slightly. Carbon monoxide also kills.
Avoid alcoholic beverages. I know, then what will you put on your cereal…but alcohol also causes you to lose body heat.
And remember, we’re one day closer to spring!
Tough in TX - Texas Tough
Wow lot of snow seen in Texas. Also, no power?? Yes looks tough.
Thanks for the well wishes! Our house is blessed by having power at this point, and just recently we got internet service (allowing me to check in here). Others are not as fortunate, This is a historic cold spell, and things aren’t built for these kind of temps here. We have some more hurdles before we get to Friday (first projected day over freezing), but I think the worst weather is behind us.
Good Sound Advice
I have to admit I’m a bit jealous here in FL…
Lol! We have lots of snow up here in Wisconsin, and it is extremely cold!! Actually, today I thought it was warmer at 14 degrees compared to -30!!!
It’s been cold and icy here for a few days. I haven’t been enjoying it at all, but we have not lost power except for a couple hours two nights ago, and we still have water, although reduced pressure
Honestly, my prayers are with y’all who don’t get cold temps very often. I live near a military base which is home to many soldiers & their families from the South. Sometimes it’s funny to see how they react to the cold, but most times it’s downright scary to see how little they know of how to survive cold temps.
I’m glad to hear you’re in good shape. I do hope Ben’s family ranch & relatives are equally safe.
Thunderstorms, tornadoes & hurricanes are loudly violent. Cold is quiet violence.
Take a home that’s not built to stay below freezing for more than 72 hours and throw -5 low temps on it for a few days…no bueno.
The prayers continue. Some day I’ll tell you all about the Ice Storm of January 1998. Knocked out power here for up to 30 days while hundreds of phone poles exploded, destroying the delivery system.
I have a very real understanding of what you’ve been enduring.
You know, in Dante’s “Inferno,” Hell is not a hot, fiery place. It’s frozen, and the devil is trapped in the ice.
