Thinking about Waypoints vs Diatonic chords

When playing up the neck backup how are people thinking related to waypoints vs diatonic chords progression? I’ve watched and worked on two key lessons - Fretboard Geography and Waypoints.

Am I on the right track if I am thinking primarily rolling and doing licks off of waypoints of chords in the song and then using diatonic chords as kind of an “extra” cool thing to move between chords in the song? Are the waypoints most important to learn first and then diatonic chords are an add on?

That’s precisely how I think about it, @tom3! Waypoints give you the places to aim for, FG gives you creative ways to get back and forth.

The way I look at these two courses @Tom3 Tom is like a map of the banjo neck where I can locate sounds rather than places. That helps me navagate.
