The Nelons plane crash

I was sorry to learn about the Nelons. I’ve been a fan for 40 years. Southern Gospel Music.

This article details that it was a horrific plane crash. The auto pilot killed them?

We heard about this Saturday as we were in Billings, Montana. Hits close to home because this was a traveling gospel music family from Atlanta, Georgia and they had just flown out of Billings on their way to Seattle. We didn’t know them but are so shocked to hear about this tragedy. Hard to believe this could happen today and not just historically like the Patsy Cline plane crash.

I’m always leery of any news that comes out directly after an aviation incident as it is often sensationalized, inaccurate, and/or contains no expert analysis. That being said, the article you linked was not any of that. That really is a breath of fresh air.

From initial reports, it does appear that the autopilot may have contributed to the accident, but aviation incidents usually have multiple contributing factors, i.e. the “Swiss Cheese Model” or the “Domino Effect” as was mentioned in the article. It would be surprising if the autopilot was the sole reason for the crash.

Here is a great source of aviation information: Juan Browne is a 777 captain for American and does an excellent job of “Just the facts, ma’am” analysis of aviation incidents on his YouTube channel blancolirio. I linked his video of the crash below. Once the official NTSB report is out, Juan usually posts an update video of the findings.

Juan is great and one of my sources. Another famous but controversial YouTube crash analyzer is a student on the site, tons of pilots here for some reason.

You’re right that many jump too quickly to conclusions trying to get the clicks.

Tragic loss here, like always. The Pilatus is essentially a bulletproof platform, so especially rare.
