I’m always leery of any news that comes out directly after an aviation incident as it is often sensationalized, inaccurate, and/or contains no expert analysis. That being said, the article you linked was not any of that. That really is a breath of fresh air.
From initial reports, it does appear that the autopilot may have contributed to the accident, but aviation incidents usually have multiple contributing factors, i.e. the “Swiss Cheese Model” or the “Domino Effect” as was mentioned in the article. It would be surprising if the autopilot was the sole reason for the crash.
Here is a great source of aviation information: Juan Browne is a 777 captain for American and does an excellent job of “Just the facts, ma’am” analysis of aviation incidents on his YouTube channel blancolirio. I linked his video of the crash below. Once the official NTSB report is out, Juan usually posts an update video of the findings.
