Show us your mandolin

 This is my brand New Loar LM 500 VS I love it. It sounds great.

That looks awesome.

Thanks Mike. I am very pleased with it.

I won this mandolin last year from the Mandolin Cafe. It is a The Loar LM500vs

Thatā€™s a nice looking mando!

Thanks I love it and it was big step up from my $50 Rogue that I keep in my office and play over lunch.

I bet it was a big and enjoyable change
I have an Ovation Applause that is fine for my limited mando playing abilities, but I am thinking I might sell it and get something a bit more like yours. I havenā€™t played much mando for years, but I have been asked to fill in for someone on a few songs this weekend. Itā€™s funnyā€¦ I havenā€™t played it much for years and now I am already thinking about getting a new instrument.

Mas is very contagious and has no cure!!

I mentioned before I was filling in this weekend on mando. We practiced tonight. Any self respecting bluegrass mando player would have run in horror at my playing, but I was having fun just wanging away on it. Yee-haw! I guess I have to admit I have MAS now.

Hello everyone,
I am new to this site and am primarily a guitar player who stumbled upon the mandolin, so here trying to learn it. I have a custom built Red Valley mandolin (made in Arizona). It is a wide nut flat top (old school style) design. Being a guitar player, I canā€™t say Maple is my first choice, so I had to go with the guitar woods (Mahogany) :stuck_out_tongue:

  • Sitka top

  • Figured Mahogany back and sides

  • Spalted Mahogany neck

  • Ebony fret board, tailpiece, saddle

  • Bone Nut and Saddle top

  • Banjo-size frets

  • Wide Nut (1 1/4)

  • Diamond Abalone Inlays (Doubled on the 3rd by my personal preference)

  • The top Binding is Blood wood

  • Blood wood headstock Veneer

  • Gold Tuner machines

I recommend this builder if your looking for a very good and decent flat top. In person, it has pop and volume, and the sustain is unreal.

Went to the site. Nice looking instruments. Has a nice nice tone to it as well.

This is my Pricetone Mandolin # 200 built by Lewis Price in Sumter S.C. I finnally was able to get myself a Nice custom built Instrument after many years of playing PAC Rim Mandolins. Awesome sounding and incredible craftsmanship. His Instruments are played by a number of well know musicians. I just got a Guitar from him recently to, built out of local Red Oak, Very unique!!!

Google Pricetone Mandolins and check out his instruments!!

Thatā€™s a really nice looking mando!
Red oak? Neat. I have not seen that before. Does it sound similar to any common tone wood? Cherry and Walnut make nice instruments, but I have never played on an oak instrument.

The projection on the Guitar is Awesome!!! It is louder than the Martin I have, It sustains notes for a long time, seems like it will ring for several seconds after you stop playing if you let it. It is a little heavier than the Martin as you might imagine but the sound is great . I had no intention of buying it when I first saw it in his shop but after I played it , I was HOOKED!!! Iā€™ve got a few pictures of it some where if I can find them.

Wow. I am surprised. Iā€™d love to play one.

Kagey,

Nice looking mando. I have heard good things about pricetones.

First Iā€™ve heard of Pricetone. Very nice looking mandolin! I like the small time builders also, as you can tell.

I have heard of Pricetones before. I have seen them for sale on mandolin CafƩ and places so they are around but not as well known as others of course, but I have heard good things about them.

I bought me another mandolin. This one is a hand carved F Style. I stumbled upon a guy who had some videos of his mandolins so I shot him an email just to see what he typically charges for a custom. Basically he had some in inventory that he needed to get rid of so he made me a very good deal on it that I just had to get it. Hardest part was getting approval from my Finance Department (THE WIFE). It is not fancy, elaborate, or high end of course. Its just very basic but what I really like about it is the woody look. (I am not big on sunbursting myself, so I go after the woody or blonde looks).

Details:

Curly maple Back & Sides
Black Binding top + bottom
Engleman Spruce Top
Mascar ebony bridge (hand carved)
Mascar Ebony Fretboard
Corian Nut
Schaller Tuners

I might upgrade the bridge to a Cumberland and the nut to actual Bone. I heard Corian sounds just like bone but Iā€™d rather have the real deal. Think I might upgrade the tail piece down the road too.

I have made corian and bone saddles for the same guitar that were as identical as I could make them, and they sounded different. The corian sounded fine, but the difference was noticeable.

I like the looks of the new mando. It looks like it is all about business. No fluffy stuff required.
