Reluctant tuning!

When tuning my banjo and just getting to that near perfect pitch, as I am still turning the peg the string is not tuning up. Then with a little more gentle effort on the peg the string suddenly makes a “ Tink” sound and the string is now too sharp.
Is it the nut? I can think of some possibilities … what say ye?.

Hi @fryegys2 Larry welcome to @BanjoBen 's Forum Great question. There could be a couple of reasons for this. The nut or the bridge slots may be worn. The worm gear on on the tuning peg may be loose or worn. If it were me I would have it checked out by a banjo luthier

I bet it’s the nut, yep. Pull the strings out of the nut slot, run a razor or something very thin through them gently, then consider adding some graphite if that doesn’t fix it. If still trouble, you can carefully enlarge the slots with the correct files.

Thanks y’all appreciate the input. Happy Fathers Day!!
