Positions

Beginner question…Is there a lesson that talks about positions on the neck. I hear a lot about moving positions and such, but I’m talking a very basic learn what the positions are and how and when to play out of a certain position. I’m learning to move on the neck based on the key in a closed position and the pentatonic, but as I understand it there are finger positions as well depending on where your hand is (like 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc).

Thanks!
Jon

Hi Jon, If you are on to playing up the neck based on the key in closed position, then you are already well on your way. Here is a beginner video you have more then likely already explored.

Finger positions also apply to closed positions for the different keys. Once you move far enough up the neck, you may not need to use the pinky as much.
I’ have also heard of positions for the mandolin fretboard such as first position, second position and so on, but I’ve heard about them based on the individuals perspective. Perhaps @BanjoBen has a good way to explain it.

If you’re in to Pentatonic scales like me, this may be what you’re looking for if you haven’t already covered it. Ben teaches a couple of positions you can use.

There are also several other mando pentatonic lessons on the site. They’re all really good.
