Playing For People

I’m here to tell you just how right he is!

I had a board meeting tonight, and when the notice went out the Chair jokingly said “Joe will provide entertainment with his banjo.”
Well, I rose to the challenge & took my banjo to the meeting. Mind you, I am very much a Beginner.
When the Chair asked when I wanted to play, I replied, “If you want a short meeting, I can play now.”
When the meeting ended I offered to play “Music to Clean Up By.” First I gave a little dissertation on the history of the banjo, talked about some famous banjo players and I invited them to hold the banjo for a moment. Everyone that picked it up had the same reaction. “Ohmigod! It’s heavy!”
So I picked out “Cripple Creek” and “Old Joe Clark,” did a bit of a softer piece I came up with while noodling and closed with “Amazing Grace.” I was stunned when they applauded!
You really can fool all of the people some of the time!

Deere_Crossing is right. There’s no money in it, but playing in front of people is a lot of fun.
They have low expectations and no idea how badly you screwed up. The banjo mesmerizes them!

Hi Joe & Neil just been following this little two way crack and thought I’d jump in and do a follow up. A couple of weeks back I had a neighbour come to my door to complain about my banjo playing . Now you would think that within a small community such as ours with every other home having at least two dogs folks would get used to the noise, not this neighbour, he was complaining I wasn’t playing LOUD enough to drown out the dogs. True story. If there was any doubt, it just goes to prove that @BanjoBen 's lessons are really working.

Steve Martin once said his neighbors demanded that he practice his banjo. He replied, “What’s the matter? Don’t you like the air horn?”

Last year I was on a youth group Zoom meeting; I think I mentioned playing my banjo for entertainment or something. To my surprise, my youth pastor replied, “I would love to hear you play your banjo, Michael.”

At the end of the meeting I mentioned it again, and he said, “Well, anybody who doesn’t want to hear it can just say goodbye now, and then you can play.”

Then everybody frantically yelled “BYE!!!

Right proud of you all. You too BanJoe. ;-). I’m exploring venues to play. Not sure if “Panhandling” is the correct term or not. Our personal playlist is expanding. When we do play, I always make it a point to mention my Instructor is Banjo Ben Clark and give interested people details. In retrospect, I’m not sure if Ben Clark would thank me for the advertising or sue me for Libel for my playing, but I do feel I’m getting to be a better player. :-).

Know it’s a late response but I just started looking at the Forum. A few of us play periodically at Church, chili cook offs, etc… but busking is on my bucket list. Thinking about going to the next town over so no one recognizes me. It’s not the money, it’s more the fun of the experience described above.
