Playing and singing

I just cannot for the life of me sing and play banjo rolls at the same time. Got any suggestions?

I’ve been asking @BanjoBen for years to invite his sister Katy Lou to teach a lesson on “Playing banjo whilst Singing.” One can only hope one day this will happen.

I like to say “singing is like a 3rd hand.” It takes time to get your left and right hands working together to play a song, right? Singing is the same way. To get started, you have to slow things WAY down and teach your voice where it belongs in the rolls.

It’s a grueling task at first. After you get a few songs down, though, they start to come more naturally.

I take the Joe Mullins route…or at least what he’s done every time I’ve seen them perform. I either play, or I sing, but I don’t do them at the same time!

Yep, I’m the same way. I can sing and play chords, but once I start rolling, singing goes out the window. (If you call what I do singing)
