Playing a Uke tuned like mandolin

My 6 year old Grandson, 4 year old Grand daughter, 2 year old grand daughter, and 18 month old granddaughter seem to like Pappy playing around on his gittar, mando, and get the Banjer out just to make Grammy crazy. My wonder is about taking a Uke, and tuning it mandolin for them to begin picking at? My thought is nylon (non hurting) strings, and only 4 strings instead of 8…….please share your thoughts ? Thanks

I’m thinking that might work. You’d have to reorder the strings in thickness when putting them on the ukulele though, because you’d want the thickest one to be the low G and the thinnest one to be the E as on the mandolin.

Go for a Concert Uke not the soprano.
