Nothing is something

Listening to my new Alan Munde CDs today when I get to Doug’s Tune. There are several spots in there where the band stops playing for a few seconds and the lead instrument takes a measure. At one point, Alan has the lead, the band stops, and Alan does… nothing. Dead silence for 3 or 4 beats. I literally LOLed when I heard it, which was more of an emotional response than any other break in the song.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this is more than just a “less is more” lesson. There are times in life when the correct response is simply no response at all. Nothing can be more something than any something could be.

The trick is knowing when to use this tool.

Expanding that - Someone wisely said The tongue is the only sword that gets sharper with each use.

Lord Teach me to tame my tongue.
