Have a 1964 Gibson Mastertone Bowtie that I may trade on it. Let me know if you’re interested.

Fret wear? Neck straight? Can you provide a sound sample/ video?

Cushman re fretted it and set it up. Neck is straight. All original except for the fifth string peg. Stay tuned for video.

Year on the guitar? You buy it new? Any issues?

I purchased it new in 2022. Aside from a few very faint scratches on the pick guard and the headstock (and I mean VERY faint), no issues. Strings have been changed, but no other changes from when it was purchased. It is essentially a new instrument.

That said, I have never purchased a vintage banjo, much less a 60’s Gibson. I imagine there is probably some wear and tear on a '64 instrument. I’ve also heard that pre-63 Gibsons are superior, but that post-'63 models can be excellent too.

Was that you playing “Rocky Top?” Dang fine.

Yes. I bought it from the widow of the original owner. He played it for 44 years. After he passed away it was in the closet for 10 years. The banjo is out of North Carolina. It sounds very good. 64 was the transition year on the rims from the brown thicker rim to the black thinner rim. This one is late 64 with the black thinner rim. As far as sound I have played both and I really cannot tell any difference IF they both have the same tone ring. In 64 Gibson had the 20 hole tone rings. The earlier models had four semi holes. Folks call them solids. This one has the 20 hole original ring. It’s a factory flat head.

Yes. Started playing again a couple years ago after a very long layoff.

Certainly sounds good. Do you have any closer photos of the instrument?

Do you have a cell # I can send too?

Email would be better if that’s ok. threechords1980@gmail.com

Got it.

I have an old-school flip phone that doesn’t receive photos well

Sent.

Checked out the photos. Looks remarkably good considering its age. But I don’t think I’m ready to let go of the Martin yet. Thank you for taking the time to send the photos.

Ok.

Outstanding banjo & pickin’!
