New Microphone

Folks - I just purchased a new microphone for my podcasting and general recording endeavors… it is a Golden Age Project MKIII active ribbon mic. I am blown away - not just by its price (179.00) but by its build (built like a tank!) and its performance. Here is a little sample of me reciting the 23rd psalm in a regular room (I don’t have a treated room) with MINIMAL eq and compression. I am going to see how it sounds recording my acoustic guitar soon…

I am loving it. Got it just in time for another audio book project. I haven’t had a microphone that has required so little eq/compression for my voice.

The compressor is part of the software that comes with my Lewitt Connect 6 pre-amp. The Lewitt has an auto-config option where you connect the mic you use to it, speak into the mic for 10 seconds, then be quiet for 10 seconds while it listens to the room, and voila! done. I need very little compression on this mic. I have always been a fan of ribbon mics, but one of the downfalls is that if you accidentally apply 48v phantom power you can damage the ribbon. But this mic has a pre-amp built in to isolate the ribbon from phantom power, so it is an “Active Ribbon” mic. So far, I am loving this thing.
