Forum - Banjo Ben Clark

Mckenzie from West Yorkshire, United Kingdom!

What was it that first got you interested in playing the guitar, mandolin or banjo?
Hearing Foggy Mountain Breakdown was what inspired me to take up the banjo. And good old Duelling Banjos. Loved the sound.

How long have you been playing and what’s your motivation to play?
I’ve been playing for about 20 years, now. I enjoy the challenge of learning new tunes and just trying to do the best I can.

What’s your favorite lesson on Ben’s site and how has it helped you improve?
I really liked the Wabash Cannonball lesson. Great fun!

What’s your goal when playing?
I like to set myself little challenges, trying to improve my playing. Practice new things. But most of all, just enjoy it.

Are there any other instruments or genres of music that you enjoy playing?
I also play guitar - acoustic and electric. I’ve always liked the blues, so that’s something I tend to play a lot on the guitar. And I do like throwing bluesy licks in the banjo playing.

How long have you been a Gold Pick member?
I know it’s at least 8 years. Not sure exactly.

Do you have a favorite technique? What is it?
Banjo technique is Scruggs style. I play a little clawhammer, too.

If you could play in anyone’s band, who would it be and why?
That’s a difficult one. At the moment … The Grateful Dead. Could have a jam on the guitar and Jerry Garcia picked a mean banjer.

What type of gear or accessories have you found that work best for you?
I like using ProPik Sharpies - just always worked for me. And a metronome.

If money was no object, what would be your dream instrument(s)?
To own a banjo that was played by Earl Scruggs. Nice!

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?
Well, a bit extra picking time can’t be bad. Probably take up astronomy, too.

Anything else you’d like to add?
Best wishes to all at Banjo Ben’s. Keep safe.

Thanks for letting us feature you @Mack!
