Forum - Banjo Ben Clark

Marcus Dunn from San Jose, CA!

What was it that first got you interested in playing the guitar, mandolin or banjo?
I started playing the electric guitar after my Dad gave me his hand-me-down guitar, then from there, I got into fingerstyle acoustic guitar. It seemed to me that some of those techniques were somewhat similar to Scruggs-style banjo, so I decided to try my hand at that. It all went downhill from there…

How long have you been playing and what’s your motivation to play?
I’ve been playing one instrument or another since I was about 5.

What’s your favorite lesson on Ben’s site and how has it helped you improve?
I love the lessons that feature arrangements for all the instruments at multiple skill levels. Bill Cheatam is a good example (it’s open in my other tab!).

What’s your goal when playing?
Just make music :).

Are there any other instruments or genres of music that you enjoy playing?
Piano was the first instrument I played as a kid, learned oboe and saxophone in high school.

How long have you been a Gold Pick member?
About 4 years

Do you have a favorite technique? What is it?
The D-Tuners on my banjo. Does using those count as a technique?

If you could play in anyone’s band, who would it be and why?
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. John McEuen is one of my musical idols.

If money was no object, what would be your dream instrument(s)?
Pedal steel guitar, I’d probably pick up a dobro too

Anything else you’d like to add?
Gig 'em! I’m class of '06 and '09

Thanks for letting us feature you Marcus!
