Was just wondering how some of you learn 3 & 4 finger chords? I usually learn a song - the melody first - then I learn the chords - if they are new - by playing the rhythm over and over. Anyone else got a technique that works for them?

To me the melody and chords go hand and hand. If a melody gets stuck in my head, I hear the chords and harmonies behind it. Some would think you have to get this naturally, but this is, in my opinion, something anyone can achieve by listening to bluegrass copiously.

The first thing I want to know is the chord progression.
To me that’s the foundation of the piece.
Been working on some swing lately…I find “licks/groups” of chords that an be used for different situations and experiment with injecting them into material I already know.
