Lick Retention

I’ve done several bag-o’-licks lessons, but the problem that I keep coming across is that I eventually forget the licks that I’ve learned. Then I have to go back to that lesson to re-learn the licks. What should I do to avoid this?

Keep doing what your doing @CBoling Christopher. By doing so you are training the brain to recall these licks. Use the TEF TAB files to LISTEN to the TAB. Sight and Sound are important senses which help the brain process the information we all learn. Also don’t worry if you forget. When the time comes you need to recall that lick your brain will remember. Just like driving a car with a stick shift or stuffing a lump of pizza in your mouth. You never need to THINK about that do you? For most of us our brain will almost always open our mouth on auto pilot unless you have been sipping on the moonshine all day.

It’s a problem for all of us. The only way to really get a lick ingrained in your brain is to get it added to your lick vocabulary by playing it in as many songs and as many places as you can. Just like words in a sentence, if you use a lick enough times, it will eventually come to mind while playing.

And just like words (and so many other things) if you don’t use it, you lose it.

Yes great advice here. The comparison to vocab words is spot on. You have to find a way to use it, and use it several different contexts for it to stick.
