Kavanjo Pick up?

Has anyone here has/had any success with the Kavanjo style pick ups?? I want to get something that I can ‘plug in’… the electric banjo that I had had warmer tones than I liked… Thanks for the responses

I tried a Kavanjo pickup some time ago. It’s a humbucker system incorporated into a banjo head. It gets lots of good reviews. I could get plenty of volume out of it but I did not like the tone. I tried different preamps and whatnot but couldn’t get a sound I liked. Lately when I need to plug in I’ve been using a piezo strip mounted on the underside of the head near the bridge. I run it through a simple Boss EQ. Plenty of gain and it has a good, natural sound.

I stumbled across this yesterday. Buck Trent playing an electric banjo for Porter Wagoner in 1962. Buck’s break is at the 1:15 mark.
It kinda blew me away. I had no idea “that sound” in Porter Wagoner songs was coming from an electric banjo! I always thought is was either a guitar or pedal steel.

Gotta love retro-tech!

BTW: Stringbean is on the show for you claw hammer fans.
And for the truly curious, the show sponsor, Black Draught laxative, was originally a product for constipated cows. But like Absorbine for horses, people started using it for what ails them.
