So here’s a funny. I got home this week from my first Cabin Camp and am still buzzing with excitement about it. Anyway, it’s a rainy day here in Wisconsin so I decided to inventory and note everything of value in our music room. While digging through a closet I found not one, not two, but THREE instructional books for the mandolin. There was a receipt in one showing I ordered it in 2008…but these must have arrived when I was away on a work trip and gotten “put away” by You Know Who. Anyway, later on I’m gonna look through the Hal Leonard Mandolin Scale Finder and the Mel Bay “101 Red hot Bluegrass Mandolin Licks and Solos.” Too funny I had these and didn’t know it!
Interesting Find….and Timely!
I’m a pack rat by heart. I keep things because “someday I’ll need this.” When that day comes, I can’t find it and go buy another. Many moons later while digging through closets, or attic, or the basement or garage or crawlspace I will find the thing that I thought I would need someday.
Should I throw this old one away since I just bought a new one?
No, better not. I might need it someday.
What is this wonderful thing that I might need someday?
I have 5 copies of that book stashed away.
Why read the whole book and 5 times? In one sentence, I can provide a solution! Considering the impact it may have on the economy, I’m not going to do that. haha.
I may have a little “pack rat” in me….mostly I don’t wanna have to buy something twice. For example, when my wife and I finally moved in together (after 6 years of long distance dating) (don’t worry, we got married after we were together for 18 years….no rushing these things….). Where was I? Oh, after I moved to her place we had something around 5 shovels. Big garden shovels. She wanted to donate 4 of them to Goodwill. I asked why we’d do that…what if we broke one, then we’d have to go BUY another. She insisted we had too many shovels. So, when she wasn’t looking I stashed them in the garage attic; she never goes up there.
As for these books. I was never serious about learning mandolin until after I retired last year. Nevertheless over time I bought this book or that. I am pretty sure these books arrived when I was on a work-trip and she ‘just put them away’ and forgot to tell me about them. But now that I’ve discovered them, well, it’ll be fun to see what I’ve been missing! I’m going to dive in to the “Scale Finder” book; I’m pretty good with the common major scales but I want to get smart on the minors and other things.
Now, what room should I inventory next and what will I find there? LoL
I retired in 2017 after crunching numbers & deciding, “Heck, I’ve been poor all my working life. Why should retirement be any different?” My expenses are down & my satisfaction level is way up there! Get your expectations in order & you will love retirement!
Like you, I started back with the musical instrument that had pretty much lived in the closet while life happened. In 2019 I decided I wanted to learn to play the banjo. Diving into nooks, crannies & boxes, I found a bunch of old “how to” books, including the book that probably got many people to quit banjo, “Earl Scruggs and the 5-String Banjo.” I know that book was a real stumbling block for me. For one thing, the print is too small!
I hate when the print is too small!
