Are there any rules for adding endings to instrumentals? Can they begin directly at the last note of the song, or can you add a measure before starting? Sould they stop at a certain point? I can’t find a lot of the endings that I want to learn for banjo in tab, so I am trying to figure them out by playing along with Youtube videos.
Instrumental Endings on banjo
@banjo007, check out the Bag-o-licks endings, it’s one of the older lessons on the site but it’s really helpful to learn when and how to end a song.
Interesting question… based on my highly unscientific anlaysis (just thinking about it) I think the most normal is to have a filler measure after the last note and the ending typically picks up on the 4th beat of that bonus measure The ending seems to run 4 measures after that. I enjoy endings that run longer than expected.
Hi @banjo007 Larry
@BanjoBen used to always teach a new ending with every new lesson. I’ve lost count of the number of lessons he has created over the years. As a Gold Pick Member Larry you already have access hundreds of endings here.
The only rules to my knowledge apply when you are in a band or jam session where the group leader will raise a leg or instrument neck to indicate the tune is coming to an end - at the end of the break or chorus the nominated instrument will lead the ending. Once you’ve learned a few endings you get a sense of where they start and end.
Here is a bunch in the Key of C that will wet your whistle.
You’ll also find lots more in the lesson paths - A quick search listed these but this is a tiny sample https://banjobenclark.com/lessons/filters/instruments:banjo?search=endings
