I Quit. Smart Move

After taking a bit of a break from overloading my brain, I started working on a new song. Unfortunately, I hate the song. It’s fingernails on the blackboard for me. The reasons are many & probably pretty foolish, but so what?
However, I felt I needed to learn the song since it’s part of the course.
Didn’t matter. I hate the song, I hate playing the song and it got to the point where I hated to pick up my banjo in order to play that song.
When confronted by an obstacle, you can go through it, over it, under it or around it.
I opted for going around it. I quit trying to learn the hated song and skipped around it to another song. Now I am happy to pick up my banjo & work on a lesson.
And here’s what I learned: I don’t have to know everything. When everybody is jamming to the hated song, it’s OK if I go looking for a snack.

It’s nice to be on good terms with my banjo again!

Honestly, I was pretty surprised to see this song in the banjo checklist. But I gotta admit, it’s kind of catchy.

I know Michael, you hated to ask that question but asked it anyways.

You know, it’s easy to get into trouble when you talk, and easy to stay out of trouble if you remain quiet. I simply must remain quiet on the song title. First, I know it has its fans, so nothing good will come from me complaining about it.
Second, the reasons I hate the song will make no sense. Hate rarely does. Just take my word for it when I say this song is not the song for me. It’s not hard, difficult, tricky or challenging. It simply makes me want to retch.
Things are much better now that I’ve put it in my rear view mirror.
Sorry to disappoint the curious, but I’ll wager there is a song you hate as well, and you’d rather gargle razor blades than have to listen to it one more time.

Now that’s the kind of song I could learn to dislike quickly.:scream:

I guess we all have tunes we dislike. For me it’s Bile Them Cabbage Down - However as much as I dislike this tune it is a fundamental part of learning to play bluegrass music since the chord progression fits many bluegrass melodies. banjo

There’s no gain without some measure of pain.

Ha! Maybe that’s why I hatred the song. It sounded like “many bluegrass melodies.”
Consequently, it sounds like nothing (to my ears.) I know as I was trying to sing along with it, I kept slipping into other songs that sound just like it.
That’s when it starts to remind me of my sister-in-law. It’s all downhill from there.

Put another nickle in the jukebox and let’s hear a different song!

Hi @BanJoe You’ll have heard me say before don’t let a lesson frustrate you. If your not having fun move on find a tune you really like and work on that for a while. As regards your sister-in-law no need for us to go there.

@BanJoe, now that you left it aside, hope it made you a little bit more free, to focus on the songs that you liked.

That is exactly what is happening. Instead of becoming frustrated or discouraged, I simply gave it a shot, decided it’s not the right song for me, so let’s move on.
Put the pleasure back in picking! I’m having fun with the new song and look forward to the one after this.
It ain’t easy being a Beginner!

@BanJoe, let me guess, “You Are My Sunshine.”

Good guess, but no cigar.

I was thinking about going “woke” and say it was "Amazing Grace,’ a song written by a freakin’ slave trader-turned- minister, stealing a melody from the chained captives in the hold of his ship.
Then I would demand it be moved from the website and Ben pay reparations to any student who had to play the song.

Then the drugs wore off & I came to my senses.

Do not corporate “owners” do that today too??!! 17 U.S.C. § 101. Work (made) for hire! :wink:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_for_hire
We all can expect a big pay day now from corporations!! They all will go to sleep now!

As soon as you start talking copyright lows, all common sense goes down the drain.
