I can't figure it out!

Ok, I have a major problem. I am trying to put what I learn into practice, but I can play literally only the first three or four notes. Any ideas on what’s going on here? Suggestions on rolls to try! Thanks a heap, y’all!

I just realized I might have been a little unclear! I’m trying to learn the banjo part!

Do what you would do with any new song, try to pick out the melody. The rolls will come later.

Hi @cboling Christopher. The best way to learn how to play the banjo part is to study the fundamentals. @BanjoBen has set out a structured learning path in the beginners section. You could say it’s the ABC of playing banjo. Here you learn picking patterns including rolls, chord shapes. licks etc. All the vocabulary you need to begin a musical conversation. Once you have these down pat Ben leads you through a series of Build-a-Break Lessons that will help you develop your playing skills.

That tune example is a tall order. I’ll be honest with you. I’d struggle to pick out the banjo part. It’s starts out with a kickoff then a series of forward rolls as far as I can make out.

Well, the kickoff was the part I knew, but i hadn’t even thought of trying some forward rolls. Honestly, I’m only now beginning to see the simplicity of some of the really neat things I hear. The hard part for me is understanding that I don’t have to start at break-neck speed; I can slow it down a little bit at first! Thanks for the input!
