How to clean a banjo

I have an older banjo. My son had it for 30 years, didn’t play it much, mostly hung on a wall for decoration. The metal is quite tarnished and I’m not sure what to clean it with. I’ve seen some products (paste like) that seem to be quite toxic. Any suggestions for a non-toxic cleaning product for the metal parts of a banjo?

Thanks!

Hello @lwalker0000, welcome to the forum!

This is non-toxic, inexpensive, available at Ben’s store so worth giving it a shot, unless others have better ideas.

I don’t play Banjo so no idea but the fact that Ben carries it, it should be of quality product. I did find another expensive product elsewhere for silver/coated polishing with great review but not sure it was non-toxic.

Hey @lwalker0000. Welcome to the Forum. I use Happich Simichrome Polish (polishing paste). It’s been many years, but back in my military school days, when polishing brass and leather was a daily occurrence, we’d also use shaving cream.

Thank you for your suggestion.

Whatever you do don’t follow Steve Martin’s advice

You may want to look at the MUSIC NOMAD site and check out their products.
Just a note, if you find something of interest, go to Amazon for their product as it might
save you $$ in shipping, etc.
Hope this helps.
