Hew Guy - Introduction

Hey folks… My name is Tom (my favorite people on the planet call me Pops - that’s 3 of the most beautiful grandbabies these eyes have ever seen)

I’m a lifelong piano player (southern gospel/church). I haven’t played an instrument in about 10 years (I’m 54) after some serious illness starting in about 2015. I’m legally blind and totally disabled (means nothing here except to say I have a bunch of time on my hands).

I don’t have a fancy git-fiddle but only a meager Yamaha FG830. I’ve had it set up professionally and I’ve signed up for Gold Pick… I look forward to learning how to pick this thing… Maybe one day, if I can learn to pick it well enough, I’ll upgrade to a fancier guitar.

I know open position chords and bar chords from playing around with a guitar over the years. But, this is a new season for me and I look forward to flatpicking a guitar as my main thing.

Hope this post is acceptable.

Hi @PopsInABox Pops welcome to @BanjoBen 's Forum. I am more of what you might call a banjer player so not much help to you. That said there are a lots of great youngers here on the forum who I am sure will be happy and willing to help should you get stuck. I’ll give them a shout out now so that they can keep a watchful eye on your posts going forward. @Flatpickin_Libby @Michael_Mark @JonathanFell

Welcome to the Forum @PopsInABox! This is definitely the place for learning how to flatpick. I’d recommend starting with the beginner checklist… skim through the material you already know for review and then start plugin’ away at those lessons.

Welcome @PopsInABox! Have fun with the guitar! That was a wise choice to get a good setup. It typically makes a world of difference. Don’t be in a rush to upgrade instruments… you’ll know when it is time. Once it starts it is a never ending journey (but a fun journey).

Pops! Welcome to the Forum. I’ve heard quite a few good things about those FG830’s so I hope you enjoy picking it up and getting wonderful sounds out of it. Whether finger picking, flat picking, or strumming is your preference, it’s all here for the taking.
